Prep Wrestling: Hesperia captures team title at the MRL Finals

The Hesperia boys wrestling team squeezed out the team title at the Mojave River League finals Friday afternoon by 14 points.

The Scorpions took the team title with 205 points, while Oak Hills finished with 191 points.

Both teams had 11 wrestlers qualify for the CIF-Southern Section Individuals tournament, held at Fountain Valley High School, next week. Both Sultana and Serrano had seven wrestlers qualify.

While Hesperia took the team crown, seven Oak Hills wrestlers claimed league titles. Kameron Yamada (126), Dominic Tamayo (145), Julian Jeong (152), Dylan Bentz (160), Shea Gabriel (182), Jacob Hernandez (195) and Charles King (220) each won league titles.

Hesperia followed right behind with six wrestlers capturing league titles — Paulo Valdez (106), Emiliano Hernandez (113), Hector Hernandez (120), Evan Roy (132), Matthias Valdez (138) and Anthony Ruiz (285).

Serrano’s Blake Chaffee was the only other wrestler from a different school to capture a league title. Chaffee claimed the 170-pound title for the second consecutive season.
