Prep Wrestling: Jefferson, Bedford, Dundee, Carlson win league titles

MILAN – Caleb Smiley never has been able to earn a regular spot in the starting lineup for Jefferson’s wrestling team.

“He’s always been one of the guys in the heart of our lineup, waiting for his turn,” Bears’ coach Mike Humphrey said.

Smiley’s turn arrived Saturday in the Huron League Meet.

He seized his opportunity, dominating Devin Sawmiller of Riverview 21-6 in the 135-pound finals.

“Now, he’s a league champion,” marveled Humphrey. “I love to see kids get experience on the B team, then step up and make a difference.”

A lot of Bears made a difference Saturday as the Bears dominated the league meet. They racked up 249 points.

New Boston Huron was a distant second with 142, followed by Airport with 115, Flat Rock with 110, Grosse Ile with 103, Riverview with 76, SMCC with 44 and Milan with 43.5.

“It went pretty well for us,” Jefferson Humphrey said. “We thought we would have quite a few in the finals, but you never know until you get there. We were really pleased.”

Seth Minney (160) lost to Airport’s Evan Kemp twice during the regular season, but turned it around Saturday with a pin.

Other Jefferson champs were Isaac Masserant (103), Cody Richards (112), Dylan Garcia (130), Martre Pearson (145) and Nathan Masserant (215),

Ryder Mulherin (119), Noah White (140) and Freddie Martin (285) took second and Ty Rose (125), Kam Woiderski (171) and Anthony Cousino (189) were third.

“I think they had all 14 wrestlers place,” Huron coach Logan Ritchie said. “That’s hard when we only had 10 kids today.”

Ritchie was pleased to take second with just 10 wrestlers.

Eric Radulescu (119) and Kael Wisler (189) won championships, Carson Gemmel (112) and Andrew Ladach (130) were second and Landon Julio (135), John Lakatos (140), Daniel Hubbard (160) and Wyatt Marentette (215) third.

Airport’s Jack Mills took the 152-pound title and Kemp was second. The Jets also got thirds from Zakary VanBuskirk (112), Jacob VanBuskirk (119) and Kane Wilhite (145) and fourths from Blake Haliburda (125), Joseph Lesko (135), Tristan Philbeck (171), Gavin Day (189), Anjay Rhodes (215) and Chase Johnson (285).

Flat Rock had a champ in Joseph Siniarsk (285) and a pair of runners-up – Walter Mack (145) and Brayden Williams (215). Nicholas Dropiewski (103) and Andrew Given (152) finished third for the Rams and Wyatt Mack (130) and Brendan Adams (140) were fourth.

MaryAlice Lynch (second at 103), Murphy Bogdanski (third at 285) and Philbert Dietrich (fourth at 152) were the top placers for SMCC.

Milan’s Peter Pena was the 140-pound winner. Angelica Pena (119) and Dylan Spencer (112) placed fourth.

SOUTHEASTERN

JACKSON – Bedford had no trouble rising to the top of a 14-team field. The Mules had 173 points to 122 for runner-up Saline.

Monroe placed ninth with 65.

“I thought we competed really hard,” Bedford coach Kevin Vogel said. “We didn’t win all our matches, but the guys made improvement. For the most part, they wrestled really well.”

Bedford champions were Brock Jandasek (119), Jack Nigh (145), and Rollie Denker (160).

The Mules also got seconds from Vincent Cole (103), Nathan Gerber (130), Tyler Boerst (152) and Ethan Manger (189), third from Lucas Gerber (125) and Robbie Gossard (215) and fourths from Noah Benore (135), Jack Burton (171).

Adrian Rincon was the runner-up for Monroe at 285. The Trojans also had five wrestlers place fourth – Zach Graves (130), Tim Murphy (140), Tommy Honeycutt (145), Brock Graves (152) and Angel Rincon (160).

“We wrestled tough today, everybody wrestled hard,” Monroe coach Jordan Mayes said. “Our kids are getting better each day and as coaches we are excited to see what we can accomplish in the future.”

LCAA

CLINTON – In a meet that featured the No. 1 team in Division 4 (Hudson) and the No. 2 team in Division 3 (Clinton), there was no doubt about the top team.

Dundee, ranked No. 1 in Division 3, easily outclassed the competition. The Vikings finished with 223 points to 198 for Clinton and 172 for Hudson.

Hudson and Clinton shared second place overall in the league.

“We did a good job today,” Dundee coach Tim Roberts said. “The guys made improvements against guys they wrestled earlier. I am pleased with the improvements we made.”

Some of the biggest improvements were made by Kade Kluce and Connor Collins.

Kluce pinned Connor Younts of Clinton in the 112-pound finals after losing to the same opponent earlier this season and Collins (171) won the first tournament of his high school career.

Dundee’s other champions were Cameron Chinavare (119), Braeden Davis (125), Kaden Chinavare (130), Logan Sander (135), Aiden Davis (145) and Casey Swiderski (152)

Sander beat a state champion in the finals, Aidan Davis reached 100 career wins and Swiderski hit 150.

Ashton Viers (103) and Trey Parker (140) were second and Jacob Fenbert (160) and Aiden Massingill (215) third.

Ida did not have any placers.

DOWNRIVER LEAGUE

WOODHAVEN – Gibraltar Carlson had to settle for a share of its first Downriver League championship after finishing second to Wyandotte Roosevelt in the league meet.

The Marauders, who won the dual-meet portion of the league schedule, wound up with 249.5 points, to 272 for Wyandotte.

Carlson coach Lance Hassell was disappointed about having to share the title, but was delighted to see his team crowned as champion.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “We wrestle in a tough league. To finally come out on top feels pretty good.”

Deisel Gessner (125), Zachary Taylor (130), Eddie Light (152) and Owen Sugarbaker (160) won league titles for the Marauders.

Bennett Szucs (103) was second and Nathan Severenski (189), Gabrial Lyle (215), Derrick Szucs (285), Collin Barkley (119) and Timmy Simons (145) all placed third.
