Prep Wrestling: Jefferson takes title in Lincoln Park Tournament

LINCOLN PARK – Jefferson’s wrestling team brought home the championship trophy from the 24-team Lincoln Park Orange and Blue Classic Saturday.

The Bears scored 249 points to win easily over runner-up Oxford with 224.

John Allen (144), Carter Simota (150), and Nathan Masserant (215) were Jefferson’s champions.

Simota beat two state-ranked wrestlers and Masserant logged four pins.

Martre Pearson (165) and Seth Minney (190) were second, Isaac Masserant (120) and Chase Cousino (175) third, Ryder Mulherin (132) and Kameron Woiderski (157) fourth, and Ty Rose (126) fifth.

Flat Rock placed 16th with 41 points. Andrew Given was third for the Rams at 150.

Dundee faces top foes

DETROIT – Dundee split with a pair of nationally ranked opponents and went 2-1 overall Saturday in the Detroit Catholic Central Super Duals.

The Vikings (8-1) opened with a 52-14 loss to Cleveland St. Edward’s, No. 7 nationally, then beat Davison, No. 47 nationally, 67-9, then finished with a 41-30 verdict over Center Grove of Indiana.

Braeden Davis and Aiden Davis both went 3-0, each with two pins and a technical fall. Aiden pinned Brad Eaton of St. Ed’s who is currently ranked No. 3 in D1 in Ohio. Braeden scored a 16-1 tech fall over Joseph Sanderfer of St. Ed’s who is currently ranked No. 4 in D1 Ohio.

Trey Parker won his only match.

Mason takes second

Erie Mason claimed second place Saturday in the St. Mary Catholic Central Duals.

Blissfield took the championship, SMCC was third, and Ida was fourth.

RJ Cicero earned his 100th career victory for the Eagles while Ryan Joyce, Jon Nolan, and Andrew Perchard went 5-0. Joining Cicero at 4-1 were Ann Marie Gessener, Lincoln Murbach, Julian Araiza, and Malaki Rodriguez.

Brianna Lynch, Michael Lynch, and Devon Spalsbury were 5-0 for SMCC.

"All of our kids competed tough for the team and we fought hard in our matches," SMCC coach Nick Eby said. "I’m glad we got these matches for our kids as we continue to use them to learn and get better."

Izaiah Machuca was 5-0, Kaden Gerth and Tristen Thornsberry 4-0, and Perry Bartley, Chris Galloway and Trevor Konieczny 4-1 for Ida.

Huron wears crown

CLINTON TOWNSHIP – New Boston Huron completed a long day of wrestling by winning the Alex Mackmin Memorial Tournament Saturday.

Huron beat Madison Heights Lamphere, Dearborn Heights Annapolis, Romeo (B team), and Chippewa Valley before nipping Birmingham Brother Rice in the finals.

Wyatt Marentette, Carson Gemmel, Jason Downs, Landon Julio, and Jordan Matsos went undefeated for the Chiefs and Eric Radulescu, Brandon Mackens, Josh Graybeal, Drew Ladach, Austin Bentley, and Josh Buettner all had one loss.

"The kids wrestled tough throughout the day and we have identified what we need to work on to get better," Huron coach Logan Ritchie said.

Mills, VanBuskirk win

LAPEER – Jack Mills (165) and Jacob VanBuskirk (120) won championships for Airport at the Lapeer Tournament.

Mills beat a state-ranked opponent in the finals and VanBuskirk logged four first-period falls.

Blake Haliburda (138) placed fourth and Kenny Wingate (106) took sixth.

“I am really proud of our four placers,” Airport coach Jon Morris said. “They wrestled hard all day and showed a lot of heart.”

Monroe goes 3-2

FLUSHING – Evan Zavala (126) and Adrian Rincon (285) went 5-0 as Monroe posted a 3-2 record at the Flushing Team Tournament Saturday.

Tim Murphy (144) was 4-0 and Colin Assenmacher (113), Tommy Honeycutt (138), Brock Graves (157), and Angel Rincon (165) all had 4-1 records.

Carlson places fifth

FOWLERVILLE – Gibraltar Carlson beat Walled Lake Western 70-12, Belding 36-31, and Lansing Waverly 57-21 before falling to the host school 40-35 in the Fowlerville Duals Saturday.

The Marauders came back to beat Lake Orion 42-38 in the fifth-place match.

Benett Szucs (106), Diesel Gessner (132), Eddie Light (150), and Zachary Taylor (157) won all five of their matches for Carlson and John Wallace (126), Denim Gessner (138), Timmy Simons (165), and Matthew Beach (215) were 4-1.

Tough day for Mules

CLARKSTON – Bedford managed just one win Saturday at the Clarkston Duals.

The Mules started the day by tying the host team 37-37, but they lost on the ninth criteria.

Then they beat Lake Fenton 34-33 before falling 41-22 to Romeo and 56-15 to Dakota.
