Prep Wrestling: Roy wins lower-weight MVP at the Adrian Amaral tournament

Hesperia’s Evan Roy earned the lower-weight MVP award Saturday and helped his team to a third-place finish at the 15th annual Adrian Amaral Scholarship Invitational.

In a thrilling all-local matchup for the 132-pound championship, Roy topped Sultana’s Thomas Jablonski in just under three minutes in the championship match.

Roy spent an average of 55 seconds on the mat in each of his first four matches, which he won by pinfall before facing Thomas.

Roy earned a scholarship worth $1,000 as the lower-weight MVP. Birmingham's Noah Elliott (152) took the middle-weight MVP, and Temecula Valley's Kameron Phillips (170) earned the upper-weight scholarship.

Birmingham took first place as a team with 258.5 points. Hesperia finished third overall with 233.5 points, and Sultana took seventh at 137 points.

A pair of Roy’s teammates also won titles at the tourney.

At 195 pounds, Mikey Salazar pinned Birmingham's Fernando Cuevas at the 1:40 mark in the title match. Salazar picked up five victories in the tourney, including four by pinfall.

Angel Salgado beat his Hesperia teammate Hector Hernandez with a 4-2 decision in the 120-pound championship match.

Salgado picked up four other victories by pinfall to reach the title match.

Hernandez won three matches by pinfall, and was matched up with another teammate in the semifinals. But Emiliano Hernandez forfeited the semifinals match, and wound up taking third place with an 11-6 decision over Birmingham's Giancarlo Plaza.

Five other area wrestlers competed in the title matches.

Granite Hills’ Scott Carroll lost by pinfall to Quartz Hill’s Jaden Baer in the 220-pound title match. Carroll received two byes and won three matches, including two by pinfall.

At 160 pounds, Serrano's Alex Alfonso lost by pinfall to Temecula Valley's Logan Alawneh in the title match. Alfonso won three matches, including two by pinfall.

Chris Guerrero was the fifth Hesperia wrestler to make the championship round. Guerrero (126) lost to Birmingham’s Draven Lukata, after winning four matches, including three by pinfall.

Sultana’s Aaron Mesa lost to Moreno Valley’s Ryan Brandon at 113 pounds. He won four matches en route to the finals, including two by pinfall.

Mesa’s teammate Rocky Humphrey also lost in the championship match in the 106-pound division against Birmingham's Henry Aslikyan. Humphrey won three matches by pinfall.

  • Granite Hills — (138) Jayden Autry, third place.

  • Hesperia — (113) Zach Southern, fourth place; (120) Landin Arguelles, eighth place; (126) Andrew Diaz, fifth place; (138) Josh Hernandez, fourth place; (152) Max Stevenson, seventh place; (160) Frankie Stevenson, third place.
