Presbyterian rummage sale starts Friday

Oct. 12—The First Presbyterian Church is having its annual fall rummage sale on Friday and Saturday. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. There will be a plethora of items to buy, from clothes, furniture, appliances, electronics and more. And don't forget the prices will be low.

"We sell at low costs for families that are struggling to make ends meet, they can get some good items from here like clothing or household items, at a low cost that benefits them," said Karen Rogers, pastor at First Presbyterian Church.

All the proceeds of the rummage sale go to schools to ensure students get the supplies they need that they otherwise couldn't get such as clothes and band-aids etc. The proceeds are split between Horace Mann Elementary and Highland Park Elementary.

"I believe they (Horace Mann Elementary and Highland Park Elementar) have about 80%-90% of their students are on free lunches or reduced lunches, so that indicates a lot of poverty," Rogers said.

Items at the rummage sale are donations from community members. People are able to donate items to the First Presbyterian Church all year-round. The rummage sale originally started in the 1960s as a way to help the children in need.

"There are people who look forward to the rummage sale to do some spring cleaning or fall cleaning and bring their items here for us to sell and We get people that come here and donate more money than what the item's are priced at, simply because they know the money is put into the schools for the children," Rogers said.

One of the craziest items that Rogers remembers receiving was a giant Chicago Cubs poster, and it sold! Items donated have ranged from stuffed bears to exercise machines. As Rogers loves the community and fellowship during the rummage sale, she explained her favorite part of the event is giving the money to the schools.

Rogers has plenty of help in putting the rummage sale together including Elaine Terry, Joyce Rhoades, Nancy Ryan, Marcia Phillips and Louise Jones. Don't forget to stop by the First Presbyterian Church, at 721 Oklahoma Ave.
