Prescribed burn scheduled for Lincoln National Forest

The Lincoln National Forest has scheduled a 2,371-acre prescribed burn for the 16 Springs Project Area.

The prescribed burn will take place Nov. 2 through Nov. 14.

Smoke may be seen from Cloudcroft, Hope, 16 Springs area and Mayhill, according to news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

Hunters are being asked to avoid the area, and signs will be displayed throughout the project area to alert visitors.

Lincoln National Forest Public Affairs Officer Amanda Fry said the planned burn may be postponed if burn conditions are not optimal. She also said if weather is a factor, such as lightning or heavy winds, the dates could be moved.

"Following completion, crews will continue to monitor for hot spots, as well as regrowth and forest health in the project areas," Fry said. "This is an important part of our ongoing strategy for forest management and wildfire mitigation efforts."
