President of the European Council Charles Michel met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday, January 19 — ahead of the EU-Ukraine summit on February 3. The visit was Michel’s third since Russia launched its invasion.

Footage released by the Ukrainian president’s office shows Zelensky and Michel greeting each other warmly outside the Mariyinsky Palace and engaging in conversation inside.

In a brief statement on Facebook, Zelensky said Ukraine and the European Union have already achieved significant results in their “historic rapprochement” and are working to achieve more.

During his visit on January 19, Michel gave a speech to the parliament of Ukraine, where he reinforced the European Council’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.

“From day one, Russia miscalculated. The collapse of Ukraine did not happen and will not happen. The EU is more united than ever. And our transatlantic ties are closer than ever,” Michel said. Credit: Volodymyr Zelensky via Storyful
