Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany, has arrived in Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The meeting of both heads of state is due to be held tonight. Steinmeier arrived in Kyiv by train on the morning of Tuesday, 24 October.

Steinmeier initially wanted to meet Zelenskyy in Kyiv last Thursday. However, he had postponed the visit as the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, as well as the Federal Police and other authorities, evidently had safety concerns.

As the Office of the Federal President states, Steinmeier and Zelenskyy want to make a joint address to German cities and municipalities with a call to establish new partnerships with Ukrainian municipalities in the near future and help the people living there get through the winter.

After the cancellation of the visit last week, the presidents of Ukraine and Germany had a phone conversation, with Zelenskyy announcing that preparations were underway for Steinmeier’s visit.

In spring, relations between Kyiv and Berlin became further strained due to the refusal of a visit from Steinmeier; the Ukrainian side refused to host him because of his long-term close relations with Russia, inviting the Federal Chancellor instead.
