UPDATE: Louisiana NAACP issues statement on resignation of Shreveport chapter's president
Update January 15, 2022: Michael Lafitte provided the Times with the following statement, attributed to Dr. Michael McClanahan, Louisiana State Conference President. The statement below is posted exactly as it was provided:
"The NAACP Louisiana State Conference has accepted the resignation of Michael La'fitte as NAACP Shreveport Branch President. The resignation was effective January 1, 2021. Mr. La'Fitte expressed his reason for departure in a private conversation on December 16, 2021. As we work to ensure a smooth transition through this process. The State Conference appreciates and appolads Brother La'Fitte for his tireless efforts in stabilizing the local branch after the untimely death of Lloyd Thompson (Shreveport longest serving President) while further advocating for the voiceless in the Greater Shreveport area.
The Historic Shreveport Branch is one of the oldest branches in our Association. And history tells us that it will be around longer taking care of the people's business. As Louisiana State Conference President I have asked Brother La'Fitte to continue working in the vineyard as a member of the State's Economic Development Committee".
Original Story: Michael Lafitte has stepped down as president of the Shreveport chapter of the NAACP.
In December, some members of the local chapter called for Lafite's resignation following allegations he was involved with Woodlawn Terrace. An apartment complex that has been under fire for its living conditions.
Lafitte's involvement with the apartments remains unclear.
The resignation was effective Jan. 1, 2022.
Lafitte said he stepped down for private reasons.
Recently, Lafitte gained notoriety for founding the Dads on Duty, a group of men who work with students at Southwood High School.
Radio station KOKA is reporting that former Vice President Dr. Montrell Whitaker has stepped in as president.
