President Zelenskyy greets Ukraine’s Jewish community on occasion of Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the Ukrainian Jewish community on their New Year, Rosh Hashanah, in his evening address on Sept. 15.

"I congratulate everyone who is celebrating and wish the next year to be peaceful – finally peaceful – for the whole of Ukraine, for all our people," the president said.

“Ukraine deserves peace because it is doing everything to win.”

In his social media posts, the Ukrainian leader also wished that the New Year "will bring a new beginning and hope for a brighter future, give strength for the victory of good over evil and restoration of peace."

Earlier, Zelenskyy met with representatives of the Ukrainian Jewish community at the President’s Office.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, which this year fell on Sept. 15-17.

Meanwhile, Hasidic Jewish pilgrims flocked to the central Ukrainian city of Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

The grave of Tzadik Nachman at the Jewish cemetery in Uman is a place of pilgrimage for Hasidim from all over the world, and every year they come there to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Before the full-scale war, 20,000 to 40,000 Hasidim came to Uman. In 2022, despite the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 23,000 pilgrims came to the city, and this year, more than 30,000 were expected to visit.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as of the morning of Sept. 15, more than 32,000 Hasidic pilgrims had arrived in Uman.

This year, both Ukrainian and Israeli police officers are on duty at the pilgrimage sites.
