President Joe Biden believes that "kids should learn about our history," including the "many dark moments," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday when pressed about the president's stance on teaching critical race theory.

Psaki's comments came in response to a question on Biden's views on "anti-racism curriculum" in light of the National Education Association's recent position calling for "culturally responsive education, critical race theory and ethnic studies curriculum" to be taught from pre-K through 12th grade in schools across the country.

TEACHERS UNION'S CRITICAL RACE DECISION MARKS ESCALATION IN BATTLE

"The president believes that in our history, there are so many dark moments, and there is not just slavery and racism in our history. There is systemic racism that is still impacting society today," Psaki said. "And he believes, as I believe as a parent of children, that kids should learn about our history."

She added, "So as the spouse of an educator and as somebody who continues to believe that children should learn not just the good but also the challenging in our history, and that's part of what we're talking about here, even as it's become politically charged."

The NEA's recent vote escalated debates that already exist on the subject in many communities across the country.

"They are now owning up to deception that they were perpetuating in the media for so long that none of this was part of their agenda,” Asra Nomani, vice president of strategy and investigations for Parents Defending Education, told the Washington Examiner. "What happened is that as soon as we started documenting this from coast to coast, the teachers unions, the superintendents association, the school boards, and politicians, and unfortunately, willing activists within the community, also have tried to gaslight us and play this game of whether or not the theory is being taught."
