Preview: 2017 Mazda CX-5
The new 2017 Mazda CX-5 may look like the outgoing model, but the changes go deep and are, indeed, substantial. Although the styling updates may seem subtle, the new CX-5 is both longer and lower than the previous version.
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine carries over; output for the 2017 model wasn’t disclosed, but the last iteration of this powerplant put out 184 horsepower. Mazda has hinted that a diesel engine might come to the U.S. Buyers can still opt for either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Mazda says the 2017 models also get an enhanced stability control system.

The new CX-5’s interior looks more premium with, additional soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin. In addition, the controls seem to mimic those in the Mazda CX-9 with well-placed dash vents, a high-mounted screen, and a control knob for the infotainment system continues to reside behind the shifter. A head-up display is optional.
We'd expect the new model to retain the nimble handling and good fuel economy of the last version, which returned a respectable 25 mpg overall in our tests. Mazda also says they are paying more attention to noise isolation, so hopefully the new CX-5 will be quieter.
The previous CX-5 was a strong competitor in the compact SUV category, which for years has been dominated in our ratings by the Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4. Mazda’s approach always highlighted the fun-to-drive factor but also brought a noisy cabin, a somewhat rough ride, and a confusing infotainment system.
Pricing was not released, but the new CX-5 goes on sale in April-May 2017.
