Background:

  • A small plane crashed in the Bologovsky district of Tver Oblast, Russia, on the evening of 23 August. Rosaviatsiya [Federal Air Transport Agency − ed.] claimed that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, was on board.

  • The Grey Zone Telegram channel, which is close to the Wagner Group, claimed that Yevgeny Prigozhin's plane was shot down by air defence fire.

  • A terrorist act on board is being considered a version of Prigozhin's plane crash, reports say.

  • The Russian state TV channel Russia 24 reported on the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, saying he had died "as a result of the actions of Russian traitors".

  • The Russian media saw symbolism in the fact that the plane crash occurred on August 23, exactly two months after the Wagner PMC mutiny. Prigozhin announced his "march of justice" on the evening of 23 June.
