Primary 2023: Who is running for office in York County?

Democratic and Republican candidates recently filed paperwork to run for a variety of countywide, municipal and school district seats in the May 16 primary in York County.

It's a closed primary, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans may vote on candidates in their respective parties.

For some offices, candidates could cross-file for both the Republican and Democratic ballot. Nominated candidates move on to the ballot in the general election Nov. 7.

Here's a look at primary day information, the candidates and links to more information in some cases.

Polling place access problem in Conewago Township

York County officials reported that unexpected road construction impeded public access to York County voting precinct Conewago-1, located at Conewago Elementary School, 570 Copenhaffer Road.

County spokesman Ted Czech said the county worked with representatives of the Department of State, the Public Utility Commission, York County Office of Emergency Management and PEMA to address and correct the problem. Voters can access the precinct directly if they use Butter Road.

York County Common Pleas Court Judge Kathleen Pendergast signed an order to extend the voting hours in this precinct to allow additional time for those who were unable to access the precinct earlier in the day. The polls in this precinct will be open until at least 9:30 p.m.

The extended hours delayed the county's posting of results.

Dropping off mail-in or absentee ballots on election day

The deadline for county election boards to receive completed mail ballots is 8 p.m. May 16. A postmark by that time does not count. Voters who are returning completed mail ballots must sign and write the current date on the outer envelope to ensure their vote can be counted.
