Primary election 2023: What to know about mayor races in Central Indiana

Here's what you need to know about Central Indiana cities' races for mayor and council:

Beech Grove mayor

In the Democratic primary for the open mayor's seat in Beech Grove, City Clerk Treasurer James Coffman had 82% of the vote with about 91% of vote centers reporting. General contractor and Christian radio show host Jay Wright trailed with 18%.

Rick Skirvin ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Current Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley, a Democrat, announced in December he would not seek a fourth term.

Carmel mayor

Sue Finkam, a Carmel council member, won the Republican primary for mayor with 36% of the vote, according to complete, unofficial results. Fellow council member Kevin “Woody” Rider got 32% of the vote and former Hamilton County Councilman Fred Glynn got 32%. Longtime Mayor Jim Brainard, who didn't run for reelection, had endorsed Rider.

On the Democratic side, Councilman Miles Nelson was the only candidate.

Fishers mayor

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, a Republican, ran unopposed, with no other candidates in either major party's primary. Fadness is the first and only mayor Fishers has known since it became a city in 2015.

Greenfield mayor

In the Republican primary, Guy Titus, a business services provider for Greenfield Power & Light, led the race with 42.9% of the 1,950 votes counted as of 11:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Indiana Republican Party called the race for Titus, according to Twitter.

Kerry Grass, a current city council member, was at 42.2% of the vote, and Greenfield Street Commissioner Tyler Rankins trailed with 14.9%.

Nate Anderson, a school resource officer for Franklin Township Community Schools, ran uncontested in the Democratic primary.

Current Mayor Chuck Fewell, a Republican, didn't run for reelection.

Greenwood mayor

In the Republican primary for mayor in Greenwood, incumbent Mark Myers won with 55% of the vote, according to complete, unofficial results. Challenger Joe Hubbard trailed with 45% of the vote. No Democrats ran.

Myers has been in office since 2012.

Indianapolis mayor

Indianapolis had a crowded mayoral primary in its first municipal election following the end of the controversial slating process.

Two-term Mayor Joe Hogsett won on the Democratic side, and former City-County Councilor Jefferson Shreve won on the Republican side.

With about 91% of vote centers reporting, Hogsett won with 59% of the vote. Rep. Robin Shackleford trailed with 37% and conceded around 8:45 p.m.

Activist Larry Vaughn received 0.61% of the vote and perennial candidate Bob Kern had 1.46% with about 91% of vote centers reporting.

Though Gregory Meriweather and Clif Marsiglio appeared on the ballot, both dropped out of the race and supported Shackleford. Meriweather had 1.01% of the vote and Marsiglio got 0.78% of the vote.

On the Republican side, former City Councilor Jefferson Shreve won with 66% of the vote and about 91% of vote centers reporting. Political commentator and lawyer Abdul-Hakim Shabazz trailed with 26%, pastor James Jackson got 4% and John Couch got 4% of the vote.

Lawrence mayor

Lawrence Common Council member Deb Whitfield led by a wide margin in the Democratic mayoral primary with 77% of the vote, with about 91% of vote centers reporting. Lawrence Common Council member Shawn Denney trailed with 23% of the vote.

On the Republican side, Deputy Mayor David Hofmann ran unopposed.

Current Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier, a Republican, is not seeking reelection.

Noblesville mayor

Incumbent Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen ran uncontested in the Republican primary. He was first elected in 2019 and took office in 2020.

No Democrats ran.

Southport mayor

Current Southport Mayor James Cooney, a Republican, is running unopposed for reelection.

Westfield mayor

Westfield City Council member Scott Willis won the Republican mayoral primary here with 45% of the vote in complete, unofficial results. City Council member Jake Gilbert trailed with 42% and Plan Commission member Kristen Burkman got 13% of the vote.

They were seeking to succeed Andy Cook, who did not run for a fifth term.

There are no Democrats running in the mayoral primary race in Westfield.

Zionsville mayor

With all precincts reporting, former WTHR anchor John Stehr won the Republican mayoral primary in Zionsville with 55% of the vote, according to complete, unofficial results. Former teacher Jane Burgess got 45% of the vote.

Current Mayor Emily Styron, a Democrat, is not seeking reelection, and there is no Democratic primary candidate.
