Tuesday saw another wave of primary showdowns across the country as US voters turned out to make crucial decisions ahead of November’s general elections.

This week’s challenges included the numerous battles taking place in New York, where redistricting as well as the resignation of Gov Andrew Cuomo have brewed up a particularly interesting election season. Gov Kathy Hochul won a nomination to serve her first full term as governor in New York, while JB Pritzker coasted to victory in his own primary in Illinois where he will now face David Bailey, a state senator, in the November general election.

Meanwhile in Colorado Rep Lauren Boebert became latest far-right Trump acolyte to win own primary challenge; she faced a challenge from Don Coram of the Colorado She

The first-term congresswoman faced a coordinated effort to dig into her past by David Wheeler, the head of the “Fire Boebert” PAC who previously led a drip-drip campaign of damaging revelations that contributed to Madison Cawthorn’s primary defeat in North Carolina.

Key Points

  • Primaries took place in New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, Nebraska, Mississippi, Colorado and Illinois

  • Democratic governors coast to victory in New York and Illinois

  • Markwayne Mullin wins GOP nomination for open US Senate seat in Oklahoma

  • Lauren Boebert holds on to US House seat

Here are the states set to vote on Tuesday

Monday 27 June 2022 20:04 , John Bowden

Voters in eight states will head to the polls on Tuesday. Those states are New York, Colorado, Illinois, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, South Carolina and Oklahoma. New York’s primaries tomorrow will include races for statewide seats like the governor and lieutenant governor, while other seats including those in the state legislature and Congress will have their races conclude in August.

Boebert to face primary challenger

Monday 27 June 2022 21:05 , John Bowden

Rep Lauren Boebert, one of the House’s most controversial members, is set to face Don Coram in Tuesday’s GOP primary for the 3rd congressional district of Colorado.

She’s favoured to win, but faces a competitive challenger in Don Coram, a member of the state legislature, due in no small part to her own controversial remarks and actions. Two major PACs, the Fire Boebert PAC and the Better Than Boebert PAC, are backing her opponent.

Kathy Hochul expected to sweep NY’s Dem primary

Tuesday 28 June 2022 03:53 , John Bowden

Gov Kathy Hochul is expected to sweep the field in tomorrow’s Democratic primary as she seeks to win her first full term. Previously the state’s lieutenant governor, she took office after Gov Andrew Cuomo resigned in 2021.

She faces Juumane Williams, a popular progressive who lost to her in the lieutenant governor’s race in 2018, as well as Tom Suozzi, a conservative Democrat.

A crowded field of GOP candidate is vying to face her (or whichever of her rivals wins Tuesday’s primary) in November, though the election of a Republican governor in New York would be a rare occurrence.

Rudy Giuliani’s son makes a foray into politics

Tuesday 28 June 2022 04:44 , John Bowden

Tuesday’s elections will see the first time New York voters get the chance to vote for (or against) a Giuliani in decades.

Known by some as “America’s Mayor” after the 9/11 terrorist attacks struck his city during his mayoral tenure, Rudy Giuliani saw his reputation diminish to a great extent with his performance as lead attorney for Donald Trump’s ill-conceived effort to overturn the 2020 election in the courts. Now, just under two years later, his son Andrew is a candidate in the Republican primary for New York governor. It’s his first foray into politics at any level.

Mr Giuliani (the younger) is not likely to win his primary on Tuesday; Rep Lee Zeldin is the frontrunner for the GOP contest. If he loses, it will likely be because many voters did not want to trust the governor’s mansion in one of the US’s biggest states to a political newcomer.

Republican who voted for Jan 6 commission faces crucial test

Tuesday 28 June 2022 06:05 , John Bowden

A Republican congressman who voted to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6 attack is at risk of losing his seat on Tuesday.

Rep Michael Guest of Mississippi is facing a Trump-backed challenger in his state’s runoff. The congressman previously trailed him by a few hundred votes in the state’s primary election earlier this month.

His opponent, Navy veteran Michael Cassidy, has used his vote against him as well as his support for sending military aid to Ukraine, a prospect opposed by the isolationist far-right of the GOP.

Boebert denies she ‘encouraged’ official to commit crimes

Tuesday 28 June 2022 07:05 , John Bowden

Lauren Boebert’s office has released a statement to The Washington Post denying a claim from an embattled GOP county clerk whose efforts to prove nonexistant fraud in the 2020 election led to actions that resulted in her indictment on numerous criminal charges.

Now Mesa County clerk Tina Peters is claiming in statements to journalists that Ms Boebert “encouraged” her actions.

Mike Lee faces crucial challenge in Utah

Tuesday 28 June 2022 08:15 , John Bowden

Donald Trump’s conservative ally in Utah, Mike Lee, is facing two primary challengers today. The two well-funded candidates, Ally Islom and Becky Edwards, have hit Mr Lee on a number of issues including his support for discredited conspiracy theorist Sidney Powell and her efforts to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 election.

He also faces lingering bad blood in the Mormon-heavy state after comparing Mr Trump to Captain Moroni from the Book of Mormon at an event. Mr Lee himself is a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

If he loses today, a fairly unlikely prospect, it will send a significant message about Utah’s GOP electorate which in recent years sent impeachment-supporting Mitt Romney to the Senate as Mr Lee’s colleague.

Illinois Republicans to pick nominee to face Gov. Pritzker

Tuesday 28 June 2022 09:15 , John Bowden

J.B. Pritzker is running for reelection as the popular Democratic governor of Illinois, home state of former first lady Michelle Obama. He’s emerged as a leader among Democratic state governors around the country, particularly given last year’s resignation of New York’s Andrew Cuomo.

On Tuesday, he’s expected to coast to victory against one primary challenger. For that reason, the millionaire-turned-governor and his Democratic allies have spend upwards of $30m attempting to sink the campaign of a centrist Republican candidate running in Tuesday’s primary in the hopes of seeing him fall to a Trump-backed rival who is seen as less electable in the purple-blue state.

Poll spells midterm trouble for GOP

Tuesday 28 June 2022 10:31 , John Bowden

A new poll released on Sunday from CBS News indicates a troubling dynamic arising for Republican candidates ahead of November’s midterms.

Following Friday’s ruling by the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs Wade, the survey shows independents and Democrats particularly more energised by the issue and eager to vote this fall. And clear majorities of both groups opposed the ruling.

That could be a problem for Republicans trying to win back the House and Senate as more and more GOP-led state legislatures around the country pursue restrictions and outright bans on abortion care services.

Two US Senate seats up for grabs in Oklahoma

Tuesday 28 June 2022 11:31 , John Bowden

Voters are heading to the polls in deep-red Oklahoma on Tuesday to decide the fate of the state’s two US Senate seats, a rare occurrence that is only happening due to the early retirement of incumbent Sen Jim Inhofe.

His colleague, Sen James Lankford, is facing a candidate in the state’s GOP primary who raising claims of RINOism due to Mr Lankford’s refusal to support Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election.

Mr Inhofe’s seat, on the other hand, will likely go to one of numerous candidates in a crowded Republican field for the open seat; currently-serving Rep Markwayne Mullin is among the challengers.

Democrats look for challenger to oust Senate’s lone Black Republican

Tuesday 28 June 2022 12:31 , John Bowden

Democrats are heading to the polls on Tuesday for a runoff election in South Carolina to determine which candidate will face Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the US Senate, in November.

Krystle Matthews and Catherine Bruce will duke it out for the chance to wage an uphill battle against Mr Scott in deep-red South Carolina. He previously won reelection in 2016 with more than 60 per cent of the vote.

Rudy Giuliani’s son faces his first feedback from voters

Tuesday 28 June 2022 15:00 , John Bowden

Tuesday’s elections will see the first time New York voters get the chance to vote for (or against) a Giuliani in decades.

Americans heading to the voting booths for first time since end of Roe v Wade

Tuesday 28 June 2022 16:00 , Gustaf Kilander

Voters in the US are heading to cast their ballots for the first time since the striking down of Roe v Wade, clearing the way for dozens of states to outlaw abortion.

On Tuesday, primaries are being held in Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma and Utah and runoffs are being conducted in Mississippi and South Carolina, and Nebraska is holding a special election.

Politico Politics editor Scott Bland said that he’s “looking for the first concrete signs of how the [Supreme Court] decision might affect Democratic primaries and the party as a whole going forward this year. In 2018, we saw a powerful swell of interest in female candidates in Democratic primaries all over the country — do we see evidence of anything like that happening this time? Are there any shifts in turnout that we can reasonably categorize as a response to the Dobbs ruling?”

Illinois race for governor drenched in cash

Tuesday 28 June 2022 17:00 , Gustaf Kilander

Seven GOP primaries will be decided in Illinois on Tuesday. While the gubernatorial contest has garnered the most attention, Democratic incumbent JB Pritzker, a billionaire who has given $125m to his own campaign, is favoured to win reelection.

In the GOP contest to challenge him, hedge fund founder Ken Griffin has given $50m out of the total $53m raised by the campaign of Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, who would be the state’s Illinois first Black governor if successful, FiveThirtyEight noted.

GOP donor Richard Uihlein has given $9m to state Senator Darren Bailey, who has brought in $11m in total. Mr Uihlein has also contributed $8m to a political action committee supporting Mr Bailey.

Jesse Sullivan, a venture capitalist, has collected $12.6m, with $11m coming from three donors.

Abortion rights could be decisive in Illinois Democratic House primaries

Tuesday 28 June 2022 18:00 , Gustaf Kilander

Abortion rights could become the decisive issue in Democratic House primaries in Illinois on Tuesday night.

“Rep Marie Newman is trailing Rep Sean Casten, so if she crosses the finish line, it might indicate that abortion rights supporters gravitated to her — even though Casten holds the same views,” Illinois reporter Shia Kapos said in Monday’s Politico Nightly. “The same goes for races in IL-07, in which Justice Democrats-backed Kina Collins is trailing veteran Rep Danny Davis, an abortion rights supporter who was just endorsed by President Joe Biden.”

“A Collins victory would indicate that the Roe decision had an impact. And in the newly drawn IL-03, the race is tight between Chicago [Alderman] Gil Villegas and state Rep Delia Ramirez,” she added. “As in the other Democratic races, Villegas and Ramirez both support abortion rights.”

“I’m also watching IL-01 — a race that has 17 Democrats in the primary, including an anti-abortion pastor, Chris Butler, who is backed by former Congressman Dan Lipinski — an anti-abortion Democrat who lost to Newman in the last cycle. Lipinski was on robocalls urging support of Butler,” Ms Kapos noted. “The race is a wild card because there are so many candidates, including Jonathan Jackson, the Rev Jesse Jackson’s son. The winner could win with as much as 20 percent of the vote. If Butler does well, it will indicate Lipinski’s anti-abortion message sunk in with voters.”

Two runoffs to be decided in Mississippi

Tuesday 28 June 2022 19:00 , Gustaf Kilander

On 7 June, no one won a majority in the two GOP primaries for the US House in Mississippi, prompting today’s runoff elections.

In the fourth congressional district, Rep Steven Palazzo has come under scrutiny for allegedly spending almost $200,000 in campaign money for personal use.

He received 32 per cent of the vote, seven per cent ahead of Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell. The other five Republicans in the race have endorsed the sheriff, FiveThirtyEight reported.

In the third district, former Navy pilot Michael Cassidy came out ahead of Rep Michael Guest – 48 to 47 per cent.

Mr Cassidy has been blasting Mr Guest for his vote to establish a January 6 commission.

Pro-choice Republican running to unseat Democratic Senator from Colorado

Tuesday 28 June 2022 20:00 , Gustaf Kilander

In the Republican primary for Colorado senator, businessman Joe O’Dea is the choice of the establishment.

“He says he supports abortion rights — rare for a Republican, but an electoral asset in a state that’s become a Democratic stronghold,” chief polling analyst Steven Shephard said in Monday’s Politico Nightly. “It’s one of the reasons why Democrats have meddled in the primary to elevate O’Dea’s more extreme opponent, state Rep Ron Hanks, who opposes the right to an abortion in all circumstances. A Democratic-linked outside group has spent just shy of $4 million on ads that either trumpet Hanks’ right-wing credentials or attack O’Dea’s, seeking either to bruise O’Dea ahead of a matchup with Democratic Sen Michael Bennet — or deny O’Dea the nomination entirely.”

Winner of Republican primary likely to replace retiring Oklahoma senator

Tuesday 28 June 2022 21:00 , Gustaf Kilander

The two Republican primaries in Oklahoma on Tuesday are both likely to go to runoffs to be decided on 23 August.

In the special election to replace retiring GOP Senator Jim Inhofe, the winner is likely to become the next senator because the state is deeply red.

The other Republican Senator from the state, James Lankford, looks likely to retain his seat.

The frontrunner to replace Mr Inhofe is Rep Markwayne Mullin. He’s managed to garner the largest campaign war chest – $3m.

In two recent polls, Mr Mullin received almost 40 per cent of the vote, according to FiveThirtyEight.

He voted against certifying the 2020 election in support of former President Donald Trump’s false claims of fraud and tried to enter Afghanistan last year to evacuate a group of Americans as the US was withdrawing its troops from the country.

New York governor pushes efforts to strengthen abortion rights in attempt to hold on to office

Tuesday 28 June 2022 22:00 , Gustaf Kilander

New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul is pushing her state’s efforts to strengthen abortion rights as she campaigns to hold on to the office after replacing former Governor Andrew Cuomo in August of last year.

“New York passed a series of laws to strengthen abortion rights in advance of the Roe decision, and ... Hochul has highlighted the state’s efforts in a series of ads in the run-up to her primary against Long Island Rep Tom Suozzi and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams,” New York Editor Joseph Spector said in Monday’s Politico Nightly.

“Hochul is a big favorite in the race, and she is expected to use a big win as a springboard for the November elections — when she would look to be the first elected woman governor in state history,” he added. “If she wins the primary, she could face a Republican foe who does not support abortion. Out of the four GOP candidates running in their own primary Tuesday, only businessman Harry Wilson supports abortion rights, and he is an underdog.

“So if Wilson loses, protecting abortion rights in New York is likely to be a major topic, particularly for Hochul in the coming months.”

First polls set to close soon

Tuesday 28 June 2022 23:33 , John Bowden

James Lankford easily wins GOP nomination in Oklahoma

01:28 , John Bowden

Despite facing a primary challenger backed by the state Republican Party chairman, Sen James Lankford appears to have easily won his party’s renomination to the US Senate. He’s likely to win a general election given Oklahoma’s deep-red bent.

With just 6 per cent of the vote in, Mr Lankford had a comfortable 23,000 vote lead over his nearest opponent, Jackson Lahmeyer.

The state’s governor, Kevin Stitt, also appears to have won his own primary for reelection.

JB Pritzker blasts to victory in Illinois

01:37 , John Bowden

Few candidates tonight will be able to say they took home the margin that JB Pritzker will see once all the votes are in.

With 10 per cent of the vote counted, the incumbent Democratic governor was declared the winner of his primary thanks to a comforable 89,000-vote lead he held over rival, Beverly miles. That margin will likely change before the end of the night, but it’s still impressive.

On the Republican side there was more good news for the governor. Darren Bailey led Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin by more than 20 per cent with 5 per cent of votes counted; Mr Pritzker and his allies spent heavily to sink the mayor’s campaign in the hopes of facing a candidate they viewed as less-electable in a general election matchup.

Progressives notch victory in Illinois

02:25 , John Bowden

The left is celebrating after progressie Delia Ramirez, a political newcomer, defeated a Chicago alderman for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the newly-drawn 3rd congressional district of Illinois.

Ms Ramirez was endorsed by Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who celebrated news of Ms Ramirez’s victory by a wide margin Tuesday evening.

Pritzker’s efforts pay off in Illinois GOP primary

02:36 , John Bowden

Richard Irvin, the mayor of Aurora Ill., has lost his primary to Darren Bailey, a member of the Illinois state senate. His loss is a victory for JB Pritzker, who with his allies spent around $30m to tank his campaign.

Mr Pritzker easily won renomination on Tuesday as he seek’s reelection to the governor’s mansion; his campaign sought to boost a candidate they saw as less electable in the GOP primary given his own dominance in the Democratic primary.

Kathy Hochul wins New York primary

02:53 , John Bowden

New York Gov Kathy Hochul has won her primary for the Democratic Party’s nomination as she seeks her first full term in the governor’s mansion. She was elevated to the office after Gov Andrew Cuomo resigned last year and since then has faced persistent personal criticism from Mr Cuomo’s closest aides.

The governor will face a Republican candidate in the fall, but is favoured to win in the deep-blue stronghold.

Ms Hochul had a little more than 66 per cent of the vote with just under a third of the results tabulated.

Lee Zeldin defeats Andrew Giuliani in NY gubernatorial primary

03:42 , John Bowden

Trump-backed candidate who said Roe ruling was ‘victory for white life’ wins Illinois primary

04:05 , John Bowden

Rep Mary Miller has won the primary for Illinois’s newly-redrawn 15th congressional district; she defeated a more moderate Republican and fellow House member after winning the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

At a recent rally over the weekend alongside the president she courted controversy with this statement in support of the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe vs Wade: “President Trump, on behalf of all the Maga patriots in America, I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court”.

Markwayne Mullin leads GOP primary for open seat in Oklahoma

04:39 , John Bowden

Markwayne Mullin, the GOP congressman, led the race for his party’s nomination on Tuesday to serve in the US Senate replacing retiring Sen Jim Inhofe. He will now advance to a runoff over second-place contender TW Shannon.

The pair beat a wide field of Republican rivals on Tuesday that included Scott Pruitt, the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency under Donald Trump who resigned amid a series of scandals involving his spending and conflicts of interests.

Salmon drops out of GOP primary race for Arizona governor

05:45 , John Bowden

Arizona’s primary is in a little more than a month, and the GOP gubernatorial field just got a little smaller.

Former U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon has dropped out in the hopes of avoiding a split of the moderate vote that could beneft Kari Lake, a former TV news reporter, who is endorsed by Donald Trump due to her support for his conspiracies about the 2020 election.

She’s now running against developer Karrin Taylor Robson in the 2 August primary.

She was in a distant third place with nearly 100 per cent of the vote reported Tuesday evening.

Mike Lee easily wins nomination for reelection in Utah

09:00 , John Bowden

Trump loyalist Mike Lee has successfully won his party’s nomination to seek reelection as senator for the state of Utah. His voting record and loyalty to the ex-president contrasts sharply with that of the state’s other GOP senator, Mitt Romney.

On Tuesday, he coasted to victory in his primary with more than 60 per cent of the vote against Becky Edwards.

GOP congressman facing ethics probe loses his seat

10:00 , John Bowden

Steven Palazzo, a GOP congressman from Mississippi, lost his House seat on Tuesday as he faces a review into whether he misused campaign funds, though it was looking increasingly unlikely that the congressman would be found liable for wrongdoing.

Republican who voted for Jan 6 commission brushes off Trump challenge

14:00 , John Bowden

Rep Michael Guest won his party’s nomination to seek reelection to Congress in Mississippi on Tuesday. In doing so, he defeated a Trump loyalist who sought to use his vote for an investigatory committee focusing on the January 6 attack against him.

“Tuesday’s Republican primary isn’t just a choice between Congressman Guest and myself, it’s your chance to say ‘no’ to the Jan. 6 commission that Guest voted for,” declared an ad run by his opponent, Michael Cassidy. Mr Cassidy lost on Tuesday by more than 30 points.

Despite his professed loyalty to Mr Trump, the challenger in Mississippi’s 3rd district failed to pick up an official endorsement before Tuesday’s race concluded.

Illinois GOP gubernatorial primary presents good news for Democrats

14:30 , John Bowden

JB Pritzker is celebrating today after winning his own party’s primary on Tuesday and promptly seeing the opponent he sought to sink in the rival Republican primary go down as well.

Mr Pritzker easily won the Illinois gubernatorial Democratic primary, but spent millions (with his allies) throughout the primary season in the hopes of sinking the campaign of Republican Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin. He will now face a state senator in the general election.

After his loss on Tuesday, Mr Irvin declared that his defeat was a victory for Mr Pritzker. The mayor’s campaign raised and spent upwards of $50 million throughout his failed primary bid, a shocking figure which was not supposed to result in a second-place primary finish.

GOP insiders: Richard Irvin’s loss is an epic ‘failure'

15:17 , John Bowden

Illinois Republicans are not happy after Richard Irvin, the mayor of Aurora, suffered a drubbing in Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary election despite raising and spending tens of millions of dollars for his campaign.

The staggering sum was not enough to weather an onslaught from both his opponents in the GOP and JB Pritzker, the state’s incumbent governor.

A GOP lawmaker who supported Darren Bailey, who won the Republican gubernatorial primary on Tuesday, called Mr Irvin’s defeat “the most epic political failure of all time.”

“It’s a total repudiation of the political establishment from the voters,” Rep. Blaine Wilhour told NBC News.

The US Supreme Court has reinstated a Republican-drawn congressional map in Louisiana that will be used in midterm elections despite rulings from lower courts deciding that it was drawn in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

The ruling is another blow for voting rights activists who have warned about GOP efforts to gerrymander communitites to prevent minority representation across the South and elsewhere.

Louisiana Gov John Bel Edwards called the ruling “more than a little disappointing” in a statement.

Trump-backed candidate who called Roe v Wade ruling a ‘victory for white life’ wins Illinois primary

16:45 , John Bowden
