Republican state Sen. Edward Durr has won his primary race against a former running mate in his bid for a second term representing the 3rd Legislative District in Trenton.
Unofficial poll results from Tuesday show Durr defeating Assemblywoman Beth Sawyer by about 3,000 votes. Both won their first terms in the 2021 election, ousting Democratic incumbents.
On the Democratic side, John Burzichelli won his party’s Senate nomination. The former assemblyman built a large lead over Mario DeSantis.
There also were contests in both parties for two General Assembly seats from the 3rd District.
In the Republican election, the winners were first-term Assemblywoman Bethanne McCarthy Patrick and Thomas J. Tedesco. Joseph Collins Jr. finished third.
In the Democratic election, the winners were Gloucester County Commissioner Heather Simmons and Dave Bailey Jr. easily defeated Tanzie Youngblood and Robert Fitzpatrick.
The 3rd District covers all of Salem County and parts of Cumberland and Gloucester counties.
4th District Republican, Democratic lineup set
In the 4th Legislative District, the only primary contests were on the Republican side. The district spans parts of Gloucester and Camden counties. All its incumbents are Democrats.
In the Democratic primary, Assemblyman Paul D. Moriarty was unopposed for a Senate seat being vacated by the retirement of Sen. Fred Madden.
Down ticket, Democrats Dan Hutchison and Cody D. Miller were unopposed for the Assembly endorsements. The positions are open due to Moriarty running for the Senate and the retirement of Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera.
In the Republican Senate contest in the 4th District, Christopher W. Del Borrello held a lead of more than 1,500 votes over Nick DeSilvio.
In the GOP Assembly race, the two top vote-getters were Matthew P. Walker and Amanda Esposito. Trailing them were Denise Gonzalez, Michael Clark, and John M. Keating.
The 2023 general election is on Nov. 7.
