Prince Charles recounts Countdown host Molly Meldrum's most royally awkward interview ever

Countdown's Molly Meldrum has received a taste of royal revenge from Prince Charles for his most awkward interview ever.

The prince has recorded a video message recalling a disastrous 1977 interview with Meldrum, where the host stumbled and mumbled his way through the entire taping.

"There is an old show business saying which warns never to work with animals or children but nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum," Prince Charles deadpanned in the video.

The iconic music show is celebrating its 40th anniversary, which has prompted the royal roast.

"Was it really 40 years ago? It seems like yesterday... I wish it were tomorrow, I'd cancel it," Prince Charles said.

In the interview a young, lithe Prince Charles attempted to make chit-chat with Meldrum who was out of his depth before he even began, looking pale and asking for a glass of water.

Meldrum managed to stumble at the very first hurdle, with his very first line starting on a less-than-dignified note.

"Your Royal Highness... oh, oh, I'm sweating like a pig," he said, wiping his brow.

Meldrum attempted to get into the swing of things by sitting down without the prince, but only succeeded in tripping himself further and swearing at his mistakes.

"I certainly learned some, um, interesting new Australian words from Mr Meldrum," Prince Charles said.

"And if he could have read my mind he could have learned some interesting new English words from me."

Meldrum's composure continued to derail, as he started slurring and becoming tongue-tied, sticking it out of his mouth and sighing after yet another outburst of swearing.

He has now conceded it was one of the worst interviews he ever recorded for the show, admitting he "stuffed up".

But despite all of the awkwardness, His Royal Highness appears to still be in jolly spirits taking the walk down memory lane.

"Congratulations to Countdown, it was an evening I will never forget, and a special thank you to Molly Meldrum," Prince Charles said.

"Countdown: gone but not forgotten."
