LANGLEY PARK, Md. (DC News Now) — Police released the name of a 2-year-old boy who died after a shooting that took place in Langley Park late Thursday afternoon.

The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) said Friday that Jeremy Poou-Caceres of the Chillum area and his mother were hit by gunfire around 5:30 p.m. The 2-year-old’s mother survived.

PGPD said a detective was working in the 1400 block of Kanawha St. when he heard gunshots. The detective found Poou-Caceres and his mother shot outside in an apartment complex. The detective used his department-issued trauma kit on Poou-Caceres until an ambulance got to the neighorhood. Poou-Caceres died at the hospital.

As of Friday, PGPD said investigators were trying to determine the reason for the shooting and find the person or people involved.

Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) Assistant Chief Vermon Hale III encouraged anyone with information to contact police when he talked about what happened Thursday.

“This isn’t about snitching, this is about justice of the victims,” Hale said.

“This violence in this community has to stop,” Deputy CAO-Public Safety, Barry Stanton, said. “The trauma that families face, that communities face everyday over gun violence is totally unacceptable and we’re going to do all we can to get the perpetrators.”
