Prince George’s County rolling out ‘MeatOut Day’ to encourage plant-based diets

LARGO, Md. (DC News Now) — Prince George’s County is rolling out the celebration of MeatOut Day to encourage residents to choose plant-based diets.

March 20 will be a day to encourage county residents to eat plant-based foods instead of food made from animals, specially meat. The focus will be towards food and health but it is also to combat animal cruelty.

The day itself isn’t new as MeatOut Day has been around since 1985, but this is the first year it will be celebrated in Prince George’s County.

County council members have decided to go all in as well, hosting a catered lunch from vegan restaurant, NuVegan.

“It does raise your awareness of what’s good for you and what’s good for the environment.” said Councilmember Jolene Ivey. “I’m doing my part and we should do our part as a council to encourage this around the county.”

NuVegan restaurant owner, Vernon Woodland, has been a vegan for 20 years said to give veganism a chance.

“Try your local vegan restaurant. Go into the grocery store to have options and if you just undecided, just just ask for samples and try it. You might like it.” he said.
