The Duke of Sussex’s HRH title is to be removed from a placard at a new exhibition displaying his mother’s wedding gown after it was added in error.

Prince Harry and Prince William lent two dresses that had belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales to the public display at Kensington Palace.

Placards originally described them as "Lent by HRH the Duke of Cambridge and HRH the Duke of Sussex".

But the Royal Collection Trust has now admitted that the younger brother’s title should not have been used and will be removed in order to reflect his new status.

A spokesperson said: "The items were lent by HRH The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex.

"Due to an administrative error, for which Royal Collection Trust was responsible, the labels were incorrect and will be updated."

The decision to correct the notice is considered indicative of the sensitivity that still surrounds the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ decision to step back from royal life and move to the US.

When the terms of their departure were thrashed out at the "Sandringham Summit" in January 2020, the Queen agreed that they could keep their titles but could not use them.

The couple’s recent and repeated criticisms of the monarchy have prompted increasing calls for them to be stripped of their titles, although Buckingham Palace aides have insisted this will not happen.

The Princess’s iconic wedding gown, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, forms the centrepiece of a landmark exhibition exploring the relationship between fashion designers and their royal clients.

Royal Style in the Making opened at Kensington Palace, the Princess's former London home, last week.

Her wedding day going-away outfit, a peach skirt suit by Bellville Sassoon, has also been lent to the exhibition by her two sons.
