Prince Harry has revealed he cut out bombshells from his book which King Charles and Prince William would not “ever forgive” him for.

In a new interview, the Duke of Sussex said he had enough material for a second book after holding back a number of revelations.

He told The Telegraph: “The first draft was different. It was 800 pages, and now it’s down to 400 pages. It could have been two books, put it that way. And the hard bit was taking things out.”

“There are some things that have happened, especially between me and my brother, and to some extent between me and my father, that I just don’t want the world to know. Because I don’t think they would ever forgive me.”

Harry’s fraught relationship with the King and Prince William is exposed in Spare, which has become the fastest selling non fiction book in history, while a poll has found Harry’s popularity has dropped since its publication.

Prince Harry says he held back some bombshells from book

Prince Harry has revealed that he has enough material to fill another book after cutting stories from his memoir that he believes the King and Prince William would not ever forgive him for if made public.

He said Spare, his ghostwritten tell-all which made an enormous splash when it was published worldwide this week, was 800 pages long at first draft before he cut it down by half for publication.

He admitted to difficulty in deciding which stories to cut from the book, which included revelations of rows with his brother and urging his father not to marry Camilla, Queen Consort.

Prince Harry and Meghan less popular than Andrew among over 65s, new poll shows

17:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry and Meghan are now less popular than disgraced royal Prince Andrew among over-65s after making bombshell revelations in Spare, a new poll has found.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have seen polling numbers plummet after Harry used his new memoir and TV interviews to discuss the ongoing row with the Royal Family.

A fresh survey by YouGov found that 73 per cent of over-65s in Britain have a “very” negative view of Harry. Some 69 per cent had the same view of the Duchess.

This compares with 60 per cent for Prince Andrew, who was stripped of his military titles and patronages in January over allegations of sexual assault, which he denies.

Late Queen’s royal aide demands apology over ‘errors’ in Prince Harry’s memoir

16:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

A former palace aide has demanded a public apology from Prince Harry over a passage written in his new memoir, Spare.

Dickie Arbiter, 82, who was assistant press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth, has claimed a passage in the Duke of Sussex’s book has been misattributed to him.

Though Arbiter is not named in the book, he says a quote in the book could be interpreted as if it was him, and he would like the publisher to apologise.

In Spare, Prince Harry discusses an article published by the Daily Mail in 2020, in which a group of royal commentations, the “Fleet Street jury” shared their opinions on Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from royal duties.

Prince Harry reveals how Diana’s perfume helped him cope with her death

16:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry has revealed how the smell of Princess Diana’s perfume helped him cope with her death.

In his new memoir, Spare, which came out on 10 January, the Duke of Sussex expressed his feeling of grief after his mother died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, at the age of 36. Harry was 12 years old at the time of Diana’s death.

He went on to note how his therapist urged him to reflect on what he remembered about his mother, including “bedtimes in Kensington Palace,” when he’d go from “inhaling her perfume” to then “lying in bed”.

“We’re breaking through,” Harry’s therapist told him. “Let’s not stop there.”

Prince Harry’s Taliban kill claim could help ex-soldiers, psychologists say

15:29 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Some traumatised ex-soldiers may be helped by Prince Harry’s revelations about how he killed 25 people in Afghanistan, according to psychologists.

They say speaking out about what he has gone through, the Duke of Sussex is “validating” his feelings.

The prince writes in his newly published memoir, Spare, that he killed 25 Taliban fighters while serving as a soldier in Afghanistan – but in interviews has denied “boasting” about it, saying that was “very dangerous spin”.

Harry’s military comrades said they were dismayed at his “unnecessary” claim, arguing it made him a much greater security risk, and also put his family in danger.

But the prince hit back in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the US, saying he hoped talking about it would help other army veterans, and especially help prevent suicides.

‘Introducing Sussex Class’: Air New Zealand makes dig at Harry and Meghan after Spare claim

14:32 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Air New Zealand has appeared to make a dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after the former included a reference to the airline in his explosive new book, Spare.

“Introducing #SussexClass,” the Kiwi flag carrier posted on its social media pages, followed by a crown emoji.

“Apparently coming soon.” The post concluded with the side-eye emoji.

The tweet and Facebook post was seemingly in response to Harry writing in his memoir that Meghan paid for a first-class flight on Air New Zealand from Mexico to the UK for her father, Thomas Markle.

The Duke of Sussex’s book, released on Tuesday, has already become the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever, according to its publishers Transworld Penguin Random House.

But a number of Twitter users have said they have been sent a PDF of the memoir on the social messaging app, potentially costing the prince lost sales, and it is not uncommon for books to be shared on illegal torrenting sites after publication.

Prince Harry recalls ‘painfully awkward’ first kiss with Cressida Bonas in memoir

On Tuesday (10 January), the Duke of Sussex’s long-awaited autobiography finally hit the shelves.

You can follow The Independent’s blog for updates here.

Prince Harry was right to tell his story – but he still has a lot to learn about racism

13:25 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry was wrong to suggest that there’s a substantive difference between “unconscious bias” and racism. There isn’t, Nadine White writes.

During an ITV interview that aired on Sunday, Prince Harry denied accusing the royal family of racism in his Oprah interview in March 2021, after Meghan revealed an unnamed family member raised concerns about how dark their unborn son Archie’s skin would be.

“No I didn’t... the British press said that... did Meghan ever mention that they’re racist? There was concern about his skin colour,” the duke told interviewer Tom Bradby. When Bradby asked: “Wouldn’t you describe that as essentially racist?” Harry replied: “I wouldn’t, not having lived within that family.”

Instead, the Duke of Sussex went on to suggest that unconscious bias was to blame for his relative’s worry about how Black his unborn child would be. Harry added: “Going back to the difference between what my understanding is because of my own experience, the difference between racism and unconscious bias, the two things are different.”

The Bee, The Fly and The Wasp: Harry’s acid outburst against the grey men in the palace

13:10 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Now that Spare by Prince Harry has been leaked, spun, translated to and from Spanish, and commanded at least four “exclusive” TV interviews with the renegade royal – and now that it has been officially published across print and digital media worldwide, reported, and digested – it’s clear who comes off worst. Prince William, Charles and then Camilla, in that order, Sean O’Grady writes.

Only the reputation of the late Queen emerges intact – he wouldn’t dare, though, would he? – while Prince Andrew gets off lightly with just the one routine condemnation, and only because Andrew got to keep his security.

But there is also some collateral damage inflicted on “The Bee, The Fly and The Wasp”. These three insects are believed to be the private secretaries of the senior royals at the time: respectively, Edward Young, who acted for the Queen; Simon Case, who worked for Prince William and Harry; and Clive Alderton, who worked for the then Prince Charles.

King Charles III is reportedly planning on inviting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to his coronation in May.

The 74-year-old monarch will be crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

A royal expert believes that Prince Harry, who has been openly critical of his father in his new autobiography Spare, will be invited to the occasion with his wife Meghan Markle.

“My sources close to the king say that he will be extending that olive branch and will be inviting Meghan and Harry to the coronation,” Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight.

Man told police he threw egg at King Charles because visit ‘was in bad taste’

11:50 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

A man has admitted to throwing an egg at King Charles during a walkabout in Luton.

Harry May, 21, has pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to throwing an egg toward the King during a walkabout in Luton in December.

Prosecutor Jason Seetal said police had detained May after seeing him hurl a projectile toward the monarch, which landed on the floor nearby as the King spoke with members of the public.

The King was temporarily steered away from the crowds outside Luton Town Hall by his security staff shortly after arriving. He then resumed shaking hands with members of the public after being moved to a different area.

Harry recalls Meghan’s seven-word retort to William amid tense ‘Fab Four’ meeting

11:05 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Meghan Markle and Prince William reportedly found themselves in a row after the Duchess of Sussex made a comment about the Princess of Wales’ hormones.

The alleged encounter is among the moments detailed in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, released today (10 January). The ghost-written autobiography accidentally went on sale in Spain five days prior to the official release, while pages of the memoir were leaked to various media outlets.

In it, Prince Harry claims that his wife asked William to get his finger out of her face during a heated argument.

Harry, no... Why Spare is a step too far even for this royals fan

10:36 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“Wait. Say that again. They call each other Willy and Harold? Harry’s necklace was ripped?! He was injured by a dog bowl!?!?!

“The explosive account of a fight between Prince Harry and Prince William, from Harry’s forthcoming memoir Spare, contains the kind of intimate, incidental details that usually make me giddily incredulous,” Jessie Thompson writes.

“I’m the type of casual royal watcher who has vague political opinions about inherited privilege but will neck a new Tina Brown book like it’s a tasty mojito.

“I watch new seasons of The Crown in a single sitting. I have even googled ‘Princess Margaret wearing sunglasses young’.

“Basically, I’m here for the drama. So I find myself in an unusual position. Harry’s book is undoubtedly the biggest and most anticipated book release of 2023, offering a no-holds-barred look into the reality of his royal life. And yet… the thought of actually reading it? Oh god. Now I’m not actually sure that I want to.”

Prince Harry has ‘turned against military family’ by revealing Afghanistan kills, ex-colonel says

10:02 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

In case you missed it...

The Duke of Sussex has now turned against his “other family, the military” after revealing he killed 25 people in Afghanistan, a retired British Army colonel has said.

Colonel Tim Collins, known for a pre-battle speech he made in Iraq, said Harry’s conduct is “not how we behave in the army”.

It comes as the duke faces an intense backlash after writing about his time in Afghanistan in his controversial memoir, Spare.

Harry wrote that flying six missions during his second tour of duty on the front line in 2012 to 2013 resulted in “the taking of human lives”, of which he was neither proud nor ashamed.

TK Maxx denies Prince Harry’s claim about shopping retailer’s annual sales

09:34 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

TK Maxx denied Prince Harry’s claim about shopping at the retailer during its yearly sales, which he mentioned in his new memoir, Spare.

In his book, which was released on 10 January, the Duke of Sussex reflected on buying from TK Maxx during their “once-a-year sale”. However, TK Maxx has now responded to the royal’s claim, noting that its stores don’t “do sales”.

“Whilst we’re delighted Prince Harry is a big fan, we thought we should explain we don’t actually do sales,” a spokesperson for the brand told Express. “Instead, we offer great value, style, and savings all year round.”

The response from TK Maxx - which is known as TJ Maxx in the US - comes after Harry made claims about how much he loves buying his daily attire from the department store.

On Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales made their first public appearance following the release of the Duke of Sussex’s memoirSpare on 10 January. They travelled to Merseyside, where they visited the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Open Door charity.

During the outing, Prince William was faced with multiple questions from reporters about his brother’s memoir, including whether he has read the book and if he was “hurt” by Harry’s claims.

Kate Middleton claims that ‘talking therapy’ doesn’t work for everyone after Prince Harry releases Spare

07:45 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Kate Middleton has claimed that talking therapy doesn’t work for everyone, just two days after Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, was released.

The Princess of Wales commented that conventional types of therapy may not be beneficial to all in her first royal engagement since the Duke of Sussex’s tell-all memoir arrived in bookshops.

In it, Harry references his own therapy sessions, uses psychotherapy language including “trauma” and details his experiences with PTSI (Post Traumatic Stress Injury). Harry even thanks therapists who helped him in the book’s acknowledgements.

Visiting various locations in Merseyside, William and Kate met several young adults at the Birkenhead-based Open Door charity on Thursday (12 January), which provides access to arts-based therapeutic support.

Prince Harry says he sees his mother Diana in Archie and Lilibet: ‘The Spencer gene is very, very strong’

07:26 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry has opened up about the “ginger gene” he passed down from his mother’s side to his son and daughter, and why he didn’t think his and Meghan Markle’s children would inherit his hair colour.

The Duke of Sussex discussed the couple’s son Archie, three, and daughter Lilibet, one, during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday 10 January.

During the conversation, which saw the royal and late-night host discuss Harry’s memoir Spare as they took shots of tequila, Colbert asked the duke whether he sees any of his late family members in his and Meghan’s children.

“Having children helps us remember those that we’ve lost. Do you see your mother or your grandparents in any of your children?” Colbert asked the duke as he held up a family portrait of Harry, Meghan and their two children.

Voices | The important health sign more people need to recognise like Harry did

07:01 , Andy Gregory

In this piece for Independent Voices, Brooke Metz writes:

In his new memoir Spare, Prince Harry explores his own experience with panic attacks. He describes still having to attend events and even speak at them, much to his dismay. Back then, anxiety was rarely discussed – and certainly not among members of the royal family.

Even just a few years ago, people didn’t discuss mental health issues as much as they do now. While anxiety has become almost a buzzword over the last couple years, with nervousness of all levels being referred to as the disorder, it wasn’t always this way.

I used to talk about my panic attacks in whispers and with a rose-colored face, like calling my mental illness by name, out loud, would cause people to see me in a different light. But I was the same person I’d always been. I just had a name for my ever-so-often inability to breathe - and it didn’t mean a trip to the emergency room.

I’m glad society is at a point now where words like “anxiety disorder” and “panic attack” can be used without needing to blush or make excuses. They’re nothing to be ashamed of. And whether you’re a royal prince or just an everyday American like me, you deserve care and support.

Prince Harry likens Diana’s perfume to a tab of LSD

06:02 , Andy Gregory

Prince Harry has revealed how the smell of Princess Diana’s perfume helped him cope with her death, likening it to “a tab of LSD”.

In Spare, he notes how his therapist urged him to reflect on what he remembered about his mother, including “bedtimes in Kensington Palace,” when he’d go from “inhaling her perfume” to then “lying in bed”.

“We’re breaking through,” Harry’s therapist told him. “Let’s not stop there.”

The royal then revealed that during one of his therapy sessions, he brought “a bottle of Mummy’s favourite perfume to the office,” before explaining how he felt when smelling it.

“First, by Van Cleef & Arpels. At the start of our session, I lifted the lid, took a deep sniff. Like a tab of LSD,” he wrote.

JR Moehringer, the ghostwriter who helped Prince Harry tell his story

05:00 , Andy Gregory

The two boys grew up 20 years and almost 3,500 miles apart, both navigating parental dysfunction, both floundering to find their places in vastly different worlds. One was a prince; one was far closer to the pauper end of the spectrum. They would both be fathers themselves by the time their professional paths crossed.

When it happened, however improbably, the teaming of ghostwriter JR Moehringer with the Duke of Sussex would lead to one of the most explosive memoirs in living memory. Prince Harry bares his soul, controversially, in the tell-all Spare, but it was Moehringer who put the royal’s story down on paper.

King Charles also carried his first official engagement since Harry’s book was released, visiting the town of Aboyne, close to the late Queen’s Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire.

He drank tea with members of the Aboyne Men’s Shed, a community facility, and watched craft skills including wood and stone carving in action.

Charles, dressed in a hunting Stewart tartan kilt, then unveiled a plaque, made by Men’s Shed member Tony Atherton, to a round of applause and said: “I am very impressed.”

After admiring it, he quipped: “Has he spelt it all right?”

Harry row ‘not just a celebrity knockabout story’, says King Charles biographer

Thursday 12 January 2023 23:56 , Andy Gregory

Prince Harry’s memoir and the continuous toxicity of the royal family rupture is “not just a celebrity knockabout story” and “the status of a significant institution of state” is ultimately at stake, a biographer of King Charles has said.

The saga could “mark the beginning of the end of the monarchy”, Catherine Mayer said, warning that this peril is exacerbated by the “layers of secrecy and obfuscation” surrounding the royals.

“The monarchy is supposed to present an idealised version of family and instead is projecting extreme dysfunction,” the Heart of a King author told The Independent, also pointing to the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew.

The arrival of Meghan Markle had initially helped the royals perform this role, galvanising “support from demographics who had never seen themselves in any way reflected by the royals” suggested Ms Mayer, who is also co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party.

But the failure of that project “has instead turned them into opponents of the monarchy”, she said.

“In comparing the title to other international biographies, sales are set to be on par, or higher, than other milestone biographies such as Michelle Obama, Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen.

“Harry Potter still holds the record for our largest first week’s sales but Spare has earned its place among the fastest selling non-fiction books in recent memory.”

Prince and Princess of Wales make first public appearance since release of Spare

Thursday 12 January 2023 15:42 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Prince and Princess of Wales made their first public appearance since the Duke of Sussex’s tell-all memoir, smiling despite the controversy as they opened a leading hospital.

Harry’s fraught relationship with William and Kate is exposed in Spare which has become the fastest selling non fiction book in history, while a poll has found Harry’s popularity has dropped since its publication.

The couple toured the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital and smiled, joked and posed for a large number of selfies with NHS staff they thanked for their efforts during the winter months.

When they first arrived, a man shouting appeared to say: “Do you ever plan to comment on Harry’s book sir?”

They ignored the question and, after being welcomed by senior figures from the hospital, began their tour of the critical care ward, meeting nurses and other staff looking after seriously ill patients.

Prince Harry condemns ‘dangerous lie’ that he ‘boasted’ about Taliban kills

Thursday 12 January 2023 14:20 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry has denied boasting about killing 25 Taliban troopers while serving as a soldier, as he cautioned against a “very dangerous” spin about his memoir.

Protests were sparked by Spare, which on Tuesday (10 January) became the UK’s fastest-selling non-fiction book, due to Harry writing he had engaged in “the taking of human lives” while serving as a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.

“So, my number is 25. It’s not a number that fills me with satisfaction, but nor does it embarrass me,” he wrote.

The 38-year-old told Stephen Colbert it had been “hurtful and challenging” watching the reactions following the book’s publication.

Panic attacks, princes and the press: 5 of the most revealing takeaways from Harry’s memoir Spare

Thursday 12 January 2023 13:55 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Unplanned leaks last week gave us an early insight into what would be discussed, but the book can now be read as a whole, Roison O’Connor writes.

Ghostwritten by JR Moehringer, the book is a timeline of sorts; it charts Harry’s younger years, including his memories of his late mother, Diana, along with his struggles dealing with press intrusion, dating while in the public eye, and his years serving in Afghanistan.

Later, he details his first dates with Meghan Markle and the growing tensions between him and his older brother William, now Prince of Wales.

In between the louder moments – the press scandals, tears and even allegations of physical fights – are poignant or, arguably, more revealing recollections.

The Duke of Sussex is frank about how multiple labels – “thicko”, “naughty”, “cheat” – affected his sense of identity, both as an individual and as the “Spare to the Heir”.

Harry and William: 7 of the pettiest moments between ‘the Heir and the Spare’

Wednesday 11 January 2023 17:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry’s memoir became the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever on its first day of publication, thanks in part to the excruciating details about the long-running feud with his older brother, William.

Early reports suggesting the Duke of Sussex would come down particularly hard on the heir to the throne have now been confirmed, as the book documents how sibling rivalry was sharpened into all-out war.

Harry frequently documents the disparities in how he and his brother were treated from a young age, right down to the decor of their childhood bedroom at Balmoral. Here are the most glaring instances of the rivalry, from squabbles to alleged physical fights.

The Duke of Sussex applauded Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, and Harald V, the King of Norway, for “leading by example” during an ABC special “Prince Harry: In His Own Words” with Michael Strahan on Monday 9 January.

During the conversation, which aired on the eve of the release of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, the duke criticised the British press for its treatment of his wife Meghan Markle, while noting the steps the other monarchs have taken to condemn such behaviour in their respective countries.

Prince Harry’s highly anticipated memoir that lifts the lid on his personal life and the inner workings of the royal family has been released today (10 January) to critics who describe the book as “absurd”, “chaotic” and “emotionally charged.”

The 416-page ghost-written autobiography, Spare, is the Duke of Sussex’s first book. Its contents, which are well-known by now, cover everything from family feuds to Harry’s virginity story and penile frostbite. It comes after Harry completes his confessional tour between TV broadcasters (ITV, CNN, ABC) to promote the book that addresses his claims in greater detail.

Harry says writing his memoir made him feel the ‘most vulnerable’ he has ever been

The Duke of Sussex told Stephen Colbert on CBS’s The Late Show he has been the “most vulnerable I have ever been in my life” by writing his memoir Spare.

Harry told the presenter he also believed he saw his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, “a handful of times” after her death.

Speaking about his mother, the duke said: “For many years I had dreams - I was convinced she was still alive.”

Asked if he thought he had seen her in certain places, Harry replied: “Only a handful of times.”

The duke then said society at large was “not exactly encouraged to grieve”, before adding: “I, through this book, have been the most vulnerable I have ever been in my life - and I’ve never felt stronger.”

King Charles carried ‘pitiful teddy bear’ with him everywhere, Prince Harry says

Wednesday 11 January 2023 13:03 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

King Charles apparently carried a teddy bear around with him everywhere, according to Prince Harry writing in his new book, Spare.

Remembering seeing his father with the teddy while he was growing up, Harry said the bear was “pitiful” with “broken arms and dangly threads”.

It’s believed the bear was from Charles’ days at boarding school Gordonstoun in Scotland, where he was badly bullied, but it’s unknown if he still takes the toy around with him.

Tailor says he did not see Kate and Meghan argue ahead of royal wedding

Wednesday 11 January 2023 12:35 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The tailor who fixed the bridesmaid dresses that sparked a row between the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex ahead of the royal wedding has said he did not witness any argument between the two women.

Ajay Mirpuri, who runs Mirpuri Bespoke tailors in London’s West End, was called in by Meghan and the Duke of Sussex four days before their May 2018 nuptials to mend six ill-fitting Givenchy dresses.

Initial reports had suggested Kate was in tears over the incident, but Harry’s account in his memoir Spare says it was Meghan who was left “sobbing on the floor”.

Mr Mirpuri told the PA news agency: “I did not see it. Any wedding on whatever level is always stressful, especially the lead up to it, and this was no different. But everyone was very friendly, very co-operative, and it was an honour to be asked to serve.”

He and a team of three others worked for three consecutive days at Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle until 4am each morning as they mended the dresses, which had been hand-sewn from measurements taken at a single fitting.

“We had done work for Harry and Meghan before and we just had a request from a PA saying ‘Can you come in and take a look?’, and that is exactly what we did,” Mr Mirpuri said.

“The issue was the sizing but I don’t know anything prior to that. Givenchy is a fantastic brand and I can’t say anything about what had happened before. We were just brought in to try to fix a challenge, and that’s what we did.”
