Prince Harry Meets School Kids While Meghan Markle Celebrates Baby Shower in New York City

It was lunch and fun with Prince Harry for a group of children Tuesday.

Harry, 34, surprised the kids during their spring “half term” holiday from school as they took part in sport and games and had a nutritious meal in a bid to beat hunger during school vacations.

The prince — whose wife Meghan Markle is in New York City for a baby shower with close pals — headed to the “Fit and Fed” February activity session on Tuesday in Streatham, south London.

He met volunteers and young leaders from Streatham Youth and Community Trust (SYCT) who were running trampolining and Jiu-jitsu sessions for children, ages 7 to 16, at the John Corfield Centre. And he then moved on to join staff and helpers making a healthy hot lunch.

The lunches fill the hunger gap for those kids who would often receive a hot meal at school. Launched in 2016, the “Fit and Fed” program is led by one of Harry’s charities, StreetGames, in a bid to tackle holiday hunger, inactivity and isolation. Nearly three-quarters of the poorest families can’t always afford to feed their children during the holidays — a problem that’s estimated to affect three million young people and children in the U.K.

Harry was also told about the work SYCT are doing to ensure local young people have a safe place to take part in activities and reduce so-called learning loss over the holidays.

In 2018, “Fit and Fed” projects delivered sessions at 321 sites, supporting 15,511 children and young people, around the country — and served up a total of 146,260 meals and snacks.

The Duchess of Sussex, 37, made a surprise trip to New York City to celebrate the upcoming arrival of her and Prince Harry‘s first child, due in late April. A source tells PEOPLE that Meghan’s friends are throwing her a baby shower before she heads back to London.

The mini-homecoming – the former actress hails from Los Angeles, where her mother Doria still resides – comes shortly before Meghan and Harry are heading to Morocco for a three-day visit highlighting two of their key causes: girls’ education and youth empowerment.
