King Charles is likely to be furious over “derogatory” nicknames Prince Harry has given private secretaries in his memoir, a royal biographer claims.

The Duke of Sussex refers to three “courtiers” as The Bee, The Fly and The Wasp, writing: “I’d spent my life dealing with courtiers, scores of them. But now I dealt mostly with just three, all middle-aged white men who’d managed to consolidate power through a series of bold Machiavellian manoeuvres.”

Robert Jobson said that anyone with a “semblance” of knowledge about the workings of the royal household would know who the “deeply insulting” comments are about.

Harry has denied boasting about killing 25 people in Afghanistan, describing this as “very dangerous” spin.

The Duke told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show in the US that watching the reactions has been “hurtful and challenging”.

“Without a doubt, the most dangerous lie that they have told is that I somehow boasted about the number of people that I killed in Afghanistan,” Harry said.

Spare has become the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever, recording figures of 400,000 copies so far across hardback, ebook and audio formats on its first day of publication.

Harry and William: 7 of the pettiest moments between ‘the Heir and the Spare’

17:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry’s memoir became the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever on its first day of publication, thanks in part to the excruciating details about the long-running feud with his older brother, William.

Early reports suggesting the Duke of Sussex would come down particularly hard on the heir to the throne have now been confirmed, as the book documents how sibling rivalry was sharpened into all-out war.

Harry frequently documents the disparities in how he and his brother were treated from a young age, right down to the decor of their childhood bedroom at Balmoral. Here are the most glaring instances of the rivalry, from squabbles to alleged physical fights.

Prince Harry says silence is ‘least effective’ way to deal with ‘painful elements of war’ amid Taliban claim

16:35 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry has spoken candidly about his decision to include excerpts in his memoir about his time in the military and the lives he took, with the Duke of Sussex revealing that “detailing” his experiences helps him on his “healing journey”.

In his memoir Spare, which was released on 10 January, the duke opened up about his two tours of Afghanistan, and “precisely how many enemy combatants” he’d killed.

“So, my number: Twenty-five. It wasn’t a number that gave me any satisfaction. But neither was it a number that made me feel ashamed,” he wrote. “Naturally, I’d have preferred not to have that number on my military CV, on my mind, but by the same token I’d have preferred to live in a world in which there was no Taliban, a world without war.”

Prince Harry has not held back in his candid memoir Spare, which finally went on sale this week after copies leaked early.

The ghostwritten autobiography has become the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever after hitting shelves on Tuesday, as the Duke of Sussex chronicles everything from family strife to personal trauma.

Many of the most notable extracts were plastered across news sites and front pages in the days leading up to its official release, thanks to a series of leaks and the 416-page tome being accidentally released early in Spain.

Spare by Prince Harry: A chaotic but stylish memoir that sets fire to the royal family

15:43 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“You might feel as if you’ve already read Prince Harry’s memoir Spare by now. The virginity lost to a stallion trainer behind a pub. The dog bowl-smashing, necklace-ripping tussle with William. The constant calling out of his family briefing the press.

“This book doesn’t so much lift the curtain on private royal life than rip it off and shake out its contents. But it’s also richly detailed and at times beautifully written; if Harry is going to set fire to his family, he has at least done it with some style.”

Harry recalled that Meghan received a text from Kate about the dresses needing to be altered.

He claimed that Meghan told Kate that their tailor, Mirpuri, would be making his way to the Kensington Palace. However, he claimed that this response “wasn’t sufficient”, before sharing the alleged text conversation between the two women.

Prince Harry says press and public attention to Meghan was means to ‘break her'

14:59 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex has said he believed press and public fascination with him and his wife was a way to make her leave and to “break her”.

Harry told Stephen Colbert on CBS’s The Late Show: “We moved to California and for 12 months during lockdown where we said literally nothing - it was relentless.

“They always knew my wife was going to leave (the UK) because of the way they were abusing her.”

Harry then joked with the audience that the interview felt like “group therapy” after being asked whether the press fascination was designed to make Meghan Markle leave the UK or break her.

Eventually, the duke said he felt like it was “both”.

13:50 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry’s highly anticipated memoir that lifts the lid on his personal life and the inner workings of the royal family has been released today (10 January) to critics who describe the book as “absurd”, “chaotic” and “emotionally charged.”

The 416-page ghost-written autobiography, Spare, is the Duke of Sussex’s first book. Its contents, which are well-known by now, cover everything from family feuds to Harry’s virginity story and penile frostbite. Speaking about his mother, the duke said: “For many years I had dreams - I was convinced she was still alive.”

Asked if he thought he had seen her in certain places, Harry replied: “Only a handful of times.”

The duke then said society at large was “not exactly encouraged to grieve”, before adding: “I, through this book, have been the most vulnerable I have ever been in my life - and I’ve never felt stronger.”

Tailor says he did not see Kate and Meghan argue ahead of royal wedding

12:35 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The tailor who fixed the bridesmaid dresses that sparked a row between the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex ahead of the royal wedding has said he did not witness any argument between the two women.

Ajay Mirpuri, who runs Mirpuri Bespoke tailors in London’s West End, was called in by Meghan and the Duke of Sussex four days before their May 2018 nuptials to mend six ill-fitting Givenchy dresses.

Initial reports had suggested Kate was in tears over the incident, but Harry’s account in his memoir Spare says it was Meghan who was left “sobbing on the floor”.

Mr Mirpuri told the PA news agency: “I did not see it. Any wedding on whatever level is always stressful, especially the lead up to it, and this was no different. But everyone was very friendly, very co-operative, and it was an honour to be asked to serve.”

He and a team of three others worked for three consecutive days at Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle until 4am each morning as they mended the dresses, which had been hand-sewn from measurements taken at a single fitting.

“We had done work for Harry and Meghan before and we just had a request from a PA saying ‘Can you come in and take a look?’, and that is exactly what we did,” Mr Mirpuri said.

“The issue was the sizing but I don’t know anything prior to that. Givenchy is a fantastic brand and I can’t say anything about what had happened before. We were just brought in to try to fix a challenge, and that’s what we did.”

“She was incredibly humorous.

“I’m genuinely happy for her because she finished life. She had an amazing life, she had an amazing career and she was buried with her husband.

“And bearing in mind the global suffering that everybody’s experienced over the last three years, there was less suffering for both of my grandparents.

“I’m really, really grateful for that.”

Carla Bruni sparks backlash after posting edited photo of Harry and Meghan

06:20 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

France’s former first lady, Carla Bruni has sparked a backlash for an edited photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, ahead of the release of the Duke of Sussex’s new memoir, Spare.

On Monday, the 55-year-old model shared a picture of the pair that was taken in 2018, ahead of their royal wedding. However, Bruni –who is married to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy – made some changes to the image, as she replaced the Duchess of Sussex’s face with Yoko Ono. Bruni’s caption of her post also featured lines from The Beatles’ 1967 song, “All You Need Is Love”.

“All you need is love ….” she wrote. “Love …Love is all you need…”

Bruni’s joke appears to be comparing Meghan’s relationship with Harry to Ono’s involvement in John Lennon’s life. The two musicians met in 1966, married in 1969, and stayed together until Lennon was murdered in 1980. However, when The Beatles broke up in 1970, fans famously blamed Ono for the split. In 1971, Ono and Lennon left the UK and moved to the US.

One day on my way home from work, I thought I was having a heart attack.

I was only 23, but the experience had all the hallmarks of a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating. The symptoms worsened the more I thought about them. I gasped for air as discreetly as one can as I commuted home on the train, sure I would die right there on my seat with only strangers around as witness.

Terrified and confused, I texted my friend, who was studying to become a doctor. When I shared my symptoms, she told me to go straight to the emergency room.

Harry frequently documents the disparities in how he and his brother were treated from a young age, right down to the decor of their childhood bedrooms at Balmoral. Here are the most glaring instances of the rivalry, from squabbles to alleged physical fights.

William ‘glum’ after Queen said he couldn’t wear Household Cavalry uniform to wedding

Tuesday 10 January 2023 23:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince William was left frustrated after not being allowed to wear the uniform he wanted to his wedding to Kate, Prince Harry has claimed in his new book.

His memoir Spare has been dominating headlines for the past week as leaks ahead of its publish date on Tuesday have revealed a slew of royal secrets.

In one segment from the book, the Duke of Sussex recalls William’s wedding to Kate Middleton, and how the late Queen Elizabeth II decided what he would wear.

When Prince Harry went to collect his brother on the morning of the royal wedding, he looked “gaunt” and had red eyes, he wrote.

The book continues: “William had asked Granny if he could wear his Household Cavalry kit and she’d turned him down.”

The Shakespearean tragedy of King Charles and his warring sons

Tuesday 10 January 2023 23:00 , Eleanor Noyce

As the ITV journalist Tom Bradby put it to Prince Harry – in what was the most candidly painful royal interview since Diana spoke to Martin Bashir about having three people in her marriage – there is a certain Shakespearean quality to the tragedy of the ”spare” son.

His very name, fashioned up Henry V-style from his formal title of Henry of Wales, carries an antique air, as if, out in Helmand province, his commanding officer intoned, “Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’” afore unleashing the helicopter dogs of war ’pon the Taliban. That sort of thing.

The flaws in his personality, some (no doubt) brought on by what he calls a “post-traumatic stress injury” after the death of his mother, are real enough. So was the tragedy of Diana herself. In the stunning words of her brother Charles, Earl Spencer, in his eulogy at Westminster Abbey, “of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this – a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age”.

Spare by Prince Harry: A chaotic but stylish memoir that sets fire to the royal family

Tuesday 10 January 2023 22:15 , Eleanor Noyce

You might feel as if you’ve already read Prince Harry’s memoir Spare by now. The virginity lost to a stallion trainer behind a pub. The dog bowl-smashing, necklace-ripping tussle with William. The constant calling out of his family briefing the press. This book doesn’t so much lift the curtain on private royal life than rip it off and shake out its contents. But it’s also richly detailed and at times beautifully written; if Harry is going to set fire to his family, he has at least done it with some style.

Spare’s ghostwriter JR Moehringer was behind tennis star Andre Agassi’s extraordinary memoir Open, and his choice as Harry’s collaborator was an early indication that the book would be no curling celebrity memoir. Even so, it is breathtakingly frank. His wife might be the natural on camera, but Harry seems to hit his stride on paper, his voice more authentic than the Californian inflections he slipped into while being interviewed with Meghan for their great soufflé of a Netflix docuseries (between the bombshells of Oprah and Spare, the streaming giant might be feeling justifiably short changed) even if at times his style is a little chaotic, written in a gallop of posh, staccato sentences that speak of “Ma”, “Pa”, “Willy”, and (yes) “todgers”.

‘Kindly take your finger out of my face’: Harry recalls tense meeting with Meghan, William and Kate

Tuesday 10 January 2023 21:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Meghan Markle and Prince William reportedly found themselves in a row after the Duchess of Sussex made a comment about the Princess of Wales’ hormones.

The alleged encounter is among the moments detailed in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, released today (10 January). The ghost-written autobiography accidentally went on sale in Spain five days prior to the official release, while pages of the memoir were leaked to various media outlets.

In it, Prince Harry claims that his wife asked William to get his finger out of her face during a heated argument.

Recalling the incident, he alleges that Kate had asked Meghan for an apology for hurting her feelings. When his wife said she was unaware of what Kate was referring to, Kate apparently brought up a phone conversation where Meghan commented on Kate’s hormones.

In the phone call, the pair were reportedly discussing the timings of wedding rehearsals.

“Meg said: ‘Oh yes! I remember: You couldn’t remember something, and I said it’s not a big deal, it’s baby brain. Because you’d just had a baby. It’s hormones,’” Harry recalls.

Prince Harry says silence is ‘least effective’ way to deal with ‘painful elements of war’ amid Taliban claim

Tuesday 10 January 2023 21:21 , Eleanor Noyce

Harry has been so open about his secrets because he is “hurting”, says trauma expert

Tuesday 10 January 2023 20:45 , Eleanor Noyce

According to a trauma recovery expert, Prince Harry has been so open about the Royal Family’s secrets in his memoir because he is “hurting.”

Dr Lisa Turner, trauma recovery expert and founder of CETfreedom, told the PA news agency Harry’s motivations could stem from “trauma”.

“There is this sense that he really does want to let his family know he’s hurting”, Turner remarked.

“Hurt people, hurt others. They do it completely unintentionally, because their hurt is so present, they can’t perceive anyone else’s hurt.

“All behaviour has a positive intention - he’s trying to get something, whether it’s catharsis, whether it’s a reaction or response.

“It’s not an immediately obvious behaviour pattern, but when people attack, criticise or accuse another of doing something, it’s actually a sign of love.

“They want acknowledgement, recognition - they’re all forms of love.”

The comments were made in spite of the publication of his controversial memoir, Spare, which levelled several accusations at the Royal Family. The autobiography hit shelves on Tuesday morning after a series of leaks.

Prince Harry told People that three-year-old Archie and 19-month-old Lilli did enjoy a connection with some of the Windsors, whom he did not name. He stated that this brought him “great joy.”

In the same interview, he described his late mother Diana as his “guardian angel”, stating that she is with him “all the time.”

All the times Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2022 revelations were proved right, or wrong

Tuesday 10 January 2023 19:15 , Eleanor Noyce

2022 was a big year for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, followed by an even more sensational start to 2023 with the launch of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare.

In December, the youngest son of King Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle released their highly-anticipated Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which gave the couple the chance to tell their story of the last four years in the spotlight, on their terms. Not to mention Meghan was also able to share details about her personal life with the release of her record-breaking Spotify podcast, Archetypes.

Throughout the past year, the couple has made a number of shocking revelations about their time as senior members of the royal family. Many of these claims made headlines, and even caught the attention of Buckingham Palace on certain occasions – forcing the Palace to issue statements regarding whether or not Harry and Meghan’s claims were unfounded.

Prince Harry reveals Meghan and Kate’s tense texts about infamous bridesmaid dresses

Tuesday 10 January 2023 17:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has revealed Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s texts about the infamous bridesmaid dresses for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 wedding.

In his new memoir, Spare, which was released on 10 January, Harry recalled how Meghan received a text from Kate about the dresses needing to be altered. He claimed that when Meghan responded, she told Kate that their tailor, Ajay, would be making his way to Kensington Palace. However, he claimed that this response “wasn’t sufficient,” before sharing the alleged text conversation between the two women.

“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy,” Kate’s text said, according to Harry. “She cried when she tried it on at home.”

Harry then claimed that Meghan responded with: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since eight a.m. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other moms are doing?”

In her reply, Kate allegedly said that “all of the dresses need to be remade”. Harry also claimed that Kate’s wedding dress designer had agreed with her.

Tuesday 10 January 2023 17:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

A reconciliation with Prince Harry is “impossible” because the King, Queen Consort and Prince William fear anything they say will be made public, The Independent understands.

A source close to the royal family said the King, Camilla and William believe the situation will remain unchanged while the Duke of Sussex remains effectively “kidnapped by a cult of psychotherapy and Meghan”.

“They are trapped,” said the source. “They really can’t engage because everything they say will be shared with the media. It is impossible to have a conversation or write a letter because of the risk that anything they say being put in the public domain by Harry, potentially for commercial benefit.

“There has been a complete breakdown of trust.”

Queen Elizabeth II put the future Duchess of Sussex on the spot at their first meeting by asking her opinion of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to Prince Harry’s new book, Spare.

Harry had brought her there to meet Sarah, Duchess of York, because his then-girlfriend was already acquainted with her daughter, Princess Eugenie, and the Princess’ then-boyfriend (now-husband) Jack Brooksbank.

Explosive memoirs haven’t brought down the royal family – but they’ve always hurt them

Tuesday 10 January 2023 14:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“When Prince Harry releases his memoir Spare this week, he won’t be the first royal to offer up personal history for public consumption,” Katie Rosseinsky writes.

“As far back as the 19th century, Harry’s forebears have shared carefully curated dispatches from behind palace doors – prompting varying degrees of controversy as they did so.

“It began with Queen Victoria, who published innocuous, calculatedly relatable insights into life as a royal widow in 1868’s Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands.

“Hardly bombshell stuff, but the follow-up book raised eyebrows for being dedicated to servant John Brown, hailed by the Queen as ‘my devoted personal attendant and faithful friend’.

For Victoria’s subjects, this was pretty spicy – her eldest son, the future Edward VII, called the book’s publication ‘insanity’.”
