The Duke of Sussex’s autobiography has become the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever, recording figures of 400,000 copies so far across hardback, ebook and audio formats on its first day of publication.

Larry Finlay, managing director of Spare’s publisher, Transworld Penguin Random House, said: “We always knew this book would fly but it is exceeding even our most bullish expectations.

“As far as we know, the only books to have sold more in their first day are those starring the other Harry (Potter).”

A number of bookshops in London opened at midnight to meet high demand after it officially went on sale, with booksellers reporting tight embargoes ahead of release. Others have extended their hours.

Spare has already hit the No 1 spot on many bestseller lists, labelled one of the “biggest pre-order titles for a decade.”

The Duke of Sussex has made a number of TV appearances in the US and UK to promote his memoir, notably giving an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby.

Tom Hardy lent Prince Harry his Mad Max costume for incognito night out with Meghan

04:00 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has told how he borrowed Tom Hardy’s Mad Max costume for a secret Halloween night out.

In his new memoir Spare, which was released on Tuesday (10 January), the Duke of Sussex details his last night out with then-girlfriend Meghan Markle before their relationship was leaked to the press.

The couple, who were in Toronto at the time, had celebrated with a small group of close friends at the city’s branch of Soho House for an apocalypse-themed Halloween event.

Harry had phoned a friend to assist with the costume for the event, writing in the memoir: “For help with my costume, I turned to a friend, the actor Tom Hardy, before I left home.

“I phoned him to ask if I could borrow his costume from Mad Max. ‘The whole thing?’ ‘Yes, please, mate! The whole kit!’”

Prince Harry recalls ‘painfully awkward’ first kiss with Cressida Bonas in memoir

03:00 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has recalled his “painfully awkward” first kiss with Cressida Bonas in his memoir Spare.

On Tuesday (10 January), the Duke of Sussex’s long-awaited autobiography finally hit the shelves.

Harry writes about having dinner with Bonas on their first date, during which “she told me about her life, her family, her dreams” of being an actor.

“Weeks later, at the end of another date, I gave her a lift home,” Harry writes. “‘I’m just off the King’s Road.’ We pulled up to a large house on a well-kept street. ‘You live here? This is your house?’ ‘No.’ She explained that she was staying for a few days with an aunt.

“I walked her up the steps. She didn’t invite me in. I didn’t expect her to, didn’t want her to. Take it slow, I thought.”

‘Spare’ by Prince Harry displayed next to ‘How To Kill Your Family’ in bookstore window

02:00 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry’s highly anticipated memoir Spare has finally hit bookshelves, but some bookstores are poking fun at the book’s scathing opinion of the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex can now add author to his résumé, after Spare was released on Tuesday 10 January following nearly a week of leaked excerpts and headline-grabbing details taking aim at the royal family.

In London, some stores opened at midnight to meet the demand for the controversial memoir, while others have extended their hours. Harry’s autobiography has already hit the No 1 spot on many bestseller lists, as others call it one of the “biggest pre-order titles for a decade”.

Now, one UK-based bookshop has created a cheeky window display for Prince Harry’s Spare. Bert’s Books in Swindon went viral on Twitter on Tuesday when they tweeted an image of the display.

In the picture, four copies of Spare are displayed alongside three copies of How To Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie. “Anyway, we do have some spare copies of Spare if you want one,” they captioned the tweet, which has almost 8,000 likes.

Prince Harry says he’s not ‘angry anymore’ as he reflects on royal family relationship

01:00 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has said that he is “not angry anymore” as he reflected on his relationship with the royal family in an interview with ABC.

The discussion at times saw the Duke of Sussex criticise members of his family and the British press for their treatment of him and his wife.

However, towards the end, Harry admitted that despite the ongoing tensions with his family - and the treatment he faces from the press - he is no longer “angry”.

“I’m not angry anymore. There are things that will still anger me, but I’m not angry anymore,” he said.

Harold vs Willy: 7 of the pettiest moments between ‘the Heir and the Spare’

00:01 , Eleanor Noyce

The long-running feud between Prince Harry and his older brother William is unlikely to end any time soon, following the publication of Harry’s controversial memoir, Spare.

Early reports suggesting the Duke of Sussex would come down particularly hard on William have now been confirmed, as the book documents how sibling rivalry was sharpened into all-out war.

Harry frequently documents the disparities in how he and his brother were treated from a young age, right down to the decor of their childhood bedrooms at Balmoral. Here are the most glaring instances of the rivalry, from squabbles to alleged physical fights.

William ‘glum’ after Queen said he couldn’t wear Household Cavalry uniform to wedding

Tuesday 10 January 2023 23:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince William was left frustrated after not being allowed to wear the uniform he wanted to his wedding to Kate, Prince Harry has claimed in his new book.

His memoir Spare has been dominating headlines for the past week as leaks ahead of its publish date on Tuesday have revealed a slew of royal secrets.

In one segment from the book, the Duke of Sussex recalls William’s wedding to Kate Middleton, and how the late Queen Elizabeth II decided what he would wear.

When Prince Harry went to collect his brother on the morning of the royal wedding, he looked “gaunt” and had red eyes, he wrote.

The book continues: “William had asked Granny if he could wear his Household Cavalry kit and she’d turned him down.”

The Shakespearean tragedy of King Charles and his warring sons

Tuesday 10 January 2023 23:00 , Eleanor Noyce

As the ITV journalist Tom Bradby put it to Prince Harry – in what was the most candidly painful royal interview since Diana spoke to Martin Bashir about having three people in her marriage – there is a certain Shakespearean quality to the tragedy of the ”spare” son.

His very name, fashioned up Henry V-style from his formal title of Henry of Wales, carries an antique air, as if, out in Helmand province, his commanding officer intoned, “Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’” afore unleashing the helicopter dogs of war ’pon the Taliban. That sort of thing.

The flaws in his personality, some (no doubt) brought on by what he calls a “post-traumatic stress injury” after the death of his mother, are real enough. So was the tragedy of Diana herself. In the stunning words of her brother Charles, Earl Spencer, in his eulogy at Westminster Abbey, “of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this – a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age”.

Spare by Prince Harry: A chaotic but stylish memoir that sets fire to the royal family

Tuesday 10 January 2023 22:15 , Eleanor Noyce

You might feel as if you’ve already read Prince Harry’s memoir Spare by now. The virginity lost to a stallion trainer behind a pub. The dog bowl-smashing, necklace-ripping tussle with William. The constant calling out of his family briefing the press. This book doesn’t so much lift the curtain on private royal life than rip it off and shake out its contents. But it’s also richly detailed and at times beautifully written; if Harry is going to set fire to his family, he has at least done it with some style.

Spare’s ghostwriter JR Moehringer was behind tennis star Andre Agassi’s extraordinary memoir Open, and his choice as Harry’s collaborator was an early indication that the book would be no curling celebrity memoir. Even so, it is breathtakingly frank. His wife might be the natural on camera, but Harry seems to hit his stride on paper, his voice more authentic than the Californian inflections he slipped into while being interviewed with Meghan for their great soufflé of a Netflix docuseries (between the bombshells of Oprah and Spare, the streaming giant might be feeling justifiably short changed) even if at times his style is a little chaotic, written in a gallop of posh, staccato sentences that speak of “Ma”, “Pa”, “Willy”, and (yes) “todgers”.

‘Kindly take your finger out of my face’: Harry recalls tense meeting with Meghan, William and Kate

Tuesday 10 January 2023 21:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Meghan Markle and Prince William reportedly found themselves in a row after the Duchess of Sussex made a comment about the Princess of Wales’ hormones.

The alleged encounter is among the moments detailed in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, released today (10 January). The ghost-written autobiography accidentally went on sale in Spain five days prior to the official release, while pages of the memoir were leaked to various media outlets.

In it, Prince Harry claims that his wife asked William to get his finger out of her face during a heated argument.

Recalling the incident, he alleges that Kate had asked Meghan for an apology for hurting her feelings. When his wife said she was unaware of what Kate was referring to, Kate apparently brought up a phone conversation where Meghan commented on Kate’s hormones.

In the phone call, the pair were reportedly discussing the timings of wedding rehearsals.

“Meg said: ‘Oh yes! I remember: You couldn’t remember something, and I said it’s not a big deal, it’s baby brain. Because you’d just had a baby. It’s hormones,’” Harry recalls.

Prince Harry says silence is ‘least effective’ way to deal with ‘painful elements of war’ amid Taliban claim

Tuesday 10 January 2023 21:21 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has spoken candidly about his decision to include excerpts in his memoir about his time in the military and the lives he took, with the Duke of Sussex revealing that “detailing” his experiences helps him on his “healing journey”.

In his memoir Spare, which was released on 10 January, the duke opened up about his two tours of Afghanistan, and “precisely how many enemy combatants” he’d killed.

“So, my number: Twenty-five. It wasn’t a number that gave me any satisfaction. But neither was it a number that made me feel ashamed,” he wrote. “Naturally, I’d have preferred not to have that number on my military CV, on my mind, but by the same token I’d have preferred to live in a world in which there was no Taliban, a world without war.”

Harry has been so open about his secrets because he is “hurting”, says trauma expert

Tuesday 10 January 2023 20:45 , Eleanor Noyce

According to a trauma recovery expert, Prince Harry has been so open about the Royal Family’s secrets in his memoir because he is “hurting.”

Dr Lisa Turner, trauma recovery expert and founder of CETfreedom, told the PA news agency Harry’s motivations could stem from “trauma”.

“There is this sense that he really does want to let his family know he’s hurting”, Turner remarked.

“Hurt people, hurt others. They do it completely unintentionally, because their hurt is so present, they can’t perceive anyone else’s hurt.

“All behaviour has a positive intention - he’s trying to get something, whether it’s catharsis, whether it’s a reaction or response.

“It’s not an immediately obvious behaviour pattern, but when people attack, criticise or accuse another of doing something, it’s actually a sign of love.

“They want acknowledgement, recognition - they’re all forms of love.”

Prince Harry hopes Archie and Lili will bond with the Royals despite controversial memoir

Tuesday 10 January 2023 20:00 , Eleanor Noyce

The Duke of Sussex has remarked that he “would like nothing more” than for his children to have relationships with the Royal Family.

The comments were made in spite of the publication of his controversial memoir, Spare, which levelled several accusations at the Royal Family. The autobiography hit shelves on Tuesday morning after a series of leaks.

Prince Harry told People that three-year-old Archie and 19-month-old Lilli did enjoy a connection with some of the Windsors, whom he did not name. He stated that this brought him “great joy.”

In the same interview, he described his late mother Diana as his “guardian angel”, stating that she is with him “all the time.”

All the times Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2022 revelations were proved right, or wrong

Tuesday 10 January 2023 19:15 , Eleanor Noyce

2022 was a big year for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, followed by an even more sensational start to 2023 with the launch of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare.

In December, the youngest son of King Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle released their highly-anticipated Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which gave the couple the chance to tell their story of the last four years in the spotlight, on their terms. Not to mention Meghan was also able to share details about her personal life with the release of her record-breaking Spotify podcast, Archetypes.

Throughout the past year, the couple has made a number of shocking revelations about their time as senior members of the royal family. Many of these claims made headlines, and even caught the attention of Buckingham Palace on certain occasions – forcing the Palace to issue statements regarding whether or not Harry and Meghan’s claims were unfounded.

Prince Harry reveals Meghan and Kate’s tense texts about infamous bridesmaid dresses

Tuesday 10 January 2023 17:30 , Eleanor Noyce

Prince Harry has revealed Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s texts about the infamous bridesmaid dresses for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 wedding.

In his new memoir, Spare, which was released on 10 January, Harry recalled how Meghan received a text from Kate about the dresses needing to be altered. He claimed that when Meghan responded, she told Kate that their tailor, Ajay, would be making his way to Kensington Palace. However, he claimed that this response “wasn’t sufficient,” before sharing the alleged text conversation between the two women.

“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy,” Kate’s text said, according to Harry. “She cried when she tried it on at home.”

Harry then claimed that Meghan responded with: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since eight a.m. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other moms are doing?”

In her reply, Kate allegedly said that “all of the dresses need to be remade”. Harry also claimed that Kate’s wedding dress designer had agreed with her.

Explosive memoirs haven’t brought down the royal family – but they’ve always hurt them

Tuesday 10 January 2023 14:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“When Prince Harry releases his memoir Spare this week, he won’t be the first royal to offer up personal history for public consumption,” Katie Rosseinsky writes.

“As far back as the 19th century, Harry’s forebears have shared carefully curated dispatches from behind palace doors – prompting varying degrees of controversy as they did so.

“It began with Queen Victoria, who published innocuous, calculatedly relatable insights into life as a royal widow in 1868’s Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands.

“Hardly bombshell stuff, but the follow-up book raised eyebrows for being dedicated to servant John Brown, hailed by the Queen as ‘my devoted personal attendant and faithful friend’.

For Victoria’s subjects, this was pretty spicy – her eldest son, the future Edward VII, called the book’s publication ‘insanity’.”

He likened the killings to “chess pieces removed from the board” and claimed those he had killed were “bad people eliminated before they could kill good people”.

Prince Harry’s memoir ‘likely to be on the biggest books of the year'

Tuesday 10 January 2023 13:36 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex‘s memoir is set to become one of the biggest books of the year, according to an industry expert, as it went on sale at half-price.

Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller, told the PA news agency it is “quite normal” to have a “big hardback” that booksellers think will do well sold at half-price by major retailers.

Harry’s controversial autobiography Spare is being sold for £14, not the recommended retail price of £28, in bookshops such as Waterstones and WH Smith as well as online at Amazon.

Spare was first leaked in Spain, where it mistakenly went on sale last week, and a host of revelations and private details about Harry’s life and family have since emerged.

Allegations from the book include his brother, the Prince of Wales, physically attacking him, and Meghan upsetting the Princess of Wales by saying she must have “baby brain” in the run-up to the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding.

Mr Jones said he believed Waterstones when the retailer said Spare had been one of its biggest pre-order titles of the past decade.

He added: “It is likely to be one of the biggest books of the year in terms of sales and impact.”

Asked how many copies a book has to sell to do well, Mr Jones said if it reaches 50,000 it will be “number one” and a “success”.

On Tuesday, Spare was number one in the UK Amazon chart and was listed as a bestseller on the company’s audiobook arm Audible and on Waterstones’ website.

Mr Jones said more than 200,000 sales would make it one of the biggest books of the year, but there is unlikely to be an announcement on numbers until next week.

For independent bookshops, low sales of would still be thought of as quite good, he added.

Mr Jones said “if it really flops” the publisher, Penguin Random House, will put the book through remainder sales and out to bargain booksellers at a lower price.

But he said it is “unlikely” to do this due to the reputational damage, so “we will probably never know” if the sales do not match the publisher’s expectations.

Meghan Markle asks Prince William to take his finger ‘out of my face'

Tuesday 10 January 2023 13:13 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry recalled the awkward encounter which culminated in Meghan Markle asking Prince William to take his finger “out of [her] face”.

In the memoir Spare, the Duke wrote about a meeting between the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Sussexes. He said Kate Middleton was “gripping the edges of the leather so tightly that her fingers were tight, and said that she was owed an apology”.

The disagreement was due to Meghan saying Kate had “baby brain” as Kate allegedly replied, “We’re not close enough for you to talk about my hormones!”

Prince Harry wrote: “Willy pointed at Meg. ‘It’s rude, Meghan. It’s not what’s done here in Britian.’”

Harry said that Meghan replied, “Kindly take your finger out of my face.”

Prince Harry said he hid under the duvet in a hotel room while room service was being delivered for him and Meghan Markle.

Sharing the memory in his new book Spare, the Duke of Sussex said he “lay flat on the bed and pulled the duvet over [his] head”.

Harry said he was running out of air while the hotel assistant manager “talked and talked” to Meghan.

“When the man finally left, I sat up gasping. Then we both gasped, we were laughing so hard.”

Slow trickle of sales as Prince Harry’s memoir is launched today

Tuesday 10 January 2023 12:23 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Bookshops opened early on Tuesday as the Duke of Sussex‘s controversial memoir hit the shelves - but queues were sparse following days of leaks ahead of the book’s publication.

Just one person was waiting outside Waterstones’ flagship branch in Piccadilly in central London when it opened at 8am.

Other royal fans had queued for midnight store openings, with a handful waiting outside WH Smith in London’s Victoria station to be one of the first to buy a copy.

Spare, which was sold early by some bookshops in Spain, contains a string of bombshell revelations and private details about Harry’s life and family, and has sparked a furore over his claims that William physically attacked him and that he killed 25 Taliban members during the Afghanistan war.

Caroline Lennon was the only one waiting to buy a copy at Waterstones in Piccadilly - Europe’s largest bookshop - after she walked two miles from Bethnal Green in the East End to arrive at 6am.

The 59-year-old told the PA news agency: “I don’t care what anybody says. People will criticise me and say ‘What an idiot for liking Harry. What an idiot for queuing up’, but I don’t care what anyone says.

“My personal feeling with Harry and William is they should connect. There’s no love between them, there’s no love with that family. He and William need to get their heads together and make up, for God’s sake. Life is too short.”

Ms Lennon recalled queuing to buy Andrew Morton’s biography of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1992, saying: “It was mad. Everyone was grabbing the books. But today I am the only one!”

She posed for photographers as she left the shop with her copy, saying: “I’m looking forward to listening to the audiobook straight away.”

Prince Harry reveals his favourite high street shops in new memoir

Tuesday 10 January 2023 12:05 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex has revealed that despite receiving an official clothing allowance from his father, the King, he would shop for his “everyday casual clothes” in TK Maxx.

Harry said that he was “particularly fond” of the discount store’s annual sale, where he could buy designer items at cheaper prices.

Writing in his autobiography Spare, the duke shared his “system” for snagging bargains and optimising his time spent shopping.

“Each year I received from Pa an official clothing allowance, but that was strictly for formal wear. Suits and ties, ceremonial outfits,” he wrote.

“For my everyday casual clothes I’d go to TK Maxx, the discount store.

“I was particularly fond of their once-a-year sale, when they’d be flush with items from Gap or J Crew, items that had just gone out of season or were slightly damaged.”

Describing his shopping operation, he continued: “If you timed it just right, got there on the first day of the sale, you could snag the same clothes that others were paying top prices for down the high street!

“With two hundred quid you could look like a fashion plate.”

Harry added that he would aim to get to the shop 15 minutes before closing time and work his way “systematically” down the racks.

He said he never “dawdled over colour or style” and “certainly never went near a changing room”.

“At closing time we would run out with two giant shopping bags, feeling triumphant,” he wrote.

“Now the papers wouldn’t call me a slob. At least for a little while.”

Piers Morgan has proven himself Meghan Markle’s greatest fan

Tuesday 10 January 2023 11:45 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“Piers Morgan is on the offensive again – in every sense of the word,” Katie Edwards writes.

“You might not have noticed because he’s maintained such a dignified silence until now, but Piers Morgan has gone for Meghan (and now her husband, Prince Harry) like a hunting pack after bait – and it’s been just as gruesome and bloodthirsty to witness.

“For reasons known only to the broadcaster and talkTV presenter, over the years he’s gone from fawning over Markle and labelling himself a ‘superfan’ on Twitter to spewing an almost constant stream of vitriol in her direction. She’s a liar, he claims. She’s playing the victim, he reckons. She ghosted him, he says.

“What Morgan doesn’t seem to realise is that he’s still proving to be Markle’s greatest superfan. If ‘fan’ stems from the word ‘fanatic’, then that seems a good description of his behaviour – he seems preoccupied with Meghan and Harry to the point of obsession.”

King to go on first royal engagement since release of Prince Harry’s memoir

Tuesday 10 January 2023 11:33 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The King will carry out a public engagement two days after the release of the Duke of Sussex‘s bombshell book.

Charles will travel to Aberdeenshire on Thursday to visit the Aboyne and Mid Deeside Community Shed for a tour of the new facilities and to meet with local hardship support groups.

It will be his first public engagement since the release of Harry’s controversial Memoir Spare which went on sale on Tuesday.

Harry’s book has sparked headlines for days due to claims that he was physically attacked by his brother the Prince of Wales, his revelation that he killed 25 Taliban members during the Afghanistan war, and admissions of drug-taking.

Regarding his father, Harry said his “Pa” was “never made” for single parenthood but had tried, and told Tom Bradby in an interview broadcast on ITV on Sunday night, that he will “always love” his father.

Narrating his autobiography, the duke said: “Over dinner one night at Highgrove, Pa and I spoke at some length about what I’d been suffering.

“I gave him the particulars, told him story after story. Towards the end of the meal he looked down at his plate and said softly ‘I suppose it’s my fault. I should have got you the help you needed years ago’.

“I assured him that it wasn’t his fault, but I appreciated the apology.”

He also questioned whether Charles had the “patience” and “time” for parenthood.

“He’d always given an air of not being quite ready for parenthood: the responsibilities, the patience, the time. Even he, though a proud man, would have admitted as much. But single parenthood? Pa was never made for that. To be fair, he tried,” he wrote.

Speaking of his affection for Charles, Harry told Bradby: “Of course, he’s my father. I will always love him.”

Opinion: The Shakespearean tragedy of King Charles and his warring sons

“As the ITV journalist Tom Bradby put it to Prince Harry – in what was the most candidly painful royal interview since Diana spoke to Martin Bashir about having three people in her marriage – there is a certain Shakespearean quality to the tragedy of the ‘spare’ son,” Sean O’Grady writes.

“His very name, fashioned up Henry V-style from his formal title of Henry of Wales, carries an antique air, as if, out in Helmand province, his commanding officer intoned, ‘Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’ afore unleashing the helicopter dogs of war ’pon the Taliban. That sort of thing.”

Prince Harry clarifies his relationship with Camilla amid his claims she was ‘the villain’

Tuesday 10 January 2023 10:51 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince Harry has clarified his relationship with his stepmother, Queen Consort Camilla Parker-Bowles, after he previously described her as “the villain” and claimed she launched a “campaign” to marry his father, King Charles.

The Duke of Sussex, who is said to make a number of surprising claims about the Queen Consort in his upcoming memoir Spare, addressed his current relationship with his stepmother during an interview with Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan on Monday 9 January.

During the conversation, Harry was asked by Strahan about his “complex feelings” towards Camilla, who the duke alleges in his book had “recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar”. Harry told Strahan that he has a “huge amount of compassion” for Camilla, “being the third person in my parents’ marriage”.

“And she had a reputation, or an image, to rehabilitate. Whatever conversations happened, whatever deals or trading was made right at the beginning, she was led to believe that that would be the best way of doing it,” Harry said.

Spare by Prince Harry sets fire to the royal family with style – review

Tuesday 10 January 2023 10:34 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

“You might feel as if you’ve already read Prince Harry’s memoir Spare by now. The virginity lost to a stallion trainer behind a pub. The dog bowl-smashing, necklace-ripping tussle with William.

“The constant calling out of his family briefing the press. This book doesn’t so much lift the curtain on private royal life than rip it off and shake out its contents.

“But it’s also richly detailed and at times beautifully written; if Harry is going to set fire to his family, he has at least done it with some style.”

Prince William was ‘glum’ after not being allowed to wear Household Cavalry uniform to wedding, memoir says

Tuesday 10 January 2023 10:14 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex wrote that Prince William was “glum” after not being allowed to wear what he wanted on his wedding day.

In an extract of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, he said his older brother had wanted to wear his Household Cavalry kit but the late Queen “turned him down”.

“As the Heir, he must wear the Number One Ceremonial, she decreed. William was glum at having so little say in what he wore to get married, at having his autonomy taken on him from such an occasion,” the memoir said.

It went on to say that the Prince of Wales told his younger brother “several times that he felt frustrated”.

Ghost of Diana ‘hovers over’ Prince Harry’s memoir, Andrew Morton says

Tuesday 10 January 2023 09:41 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Andrew Morton, who wrote the late Princess Diana’s biography, said her “ghost hovers” over Prince Harry’s memoir.

Speaking about the impact of his mother’s death on the Duke of Sussex , Mr Morton told Lorraine: “In many respects it’s rebounded on him… I think there’s a degree of overkill about this young man.

“The ghost of Diana hovers over this book.

“There’s an anger there even though he says that he’s never been happier.

“The hostility that he feels towards the media is formed by Diana’s death, but that’s predicated on a false assumption that that was due to the paparazzi… if he was able to accept that, he might end this endless crusade.”

The Duke of Sussex’s tell-all memoir that details family feuds, adolescent rebellion and the inner workings of the royal family, has officially released today (10 January), after being leaked five days prior.

In it, Harry discusses his relationship with his great aunt, Princess Margeret, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister who died in 2002.

Recalling his early memories of “Aunt Margo”, Prince Harry explains that he felt “nothing for her, except a bit of pity and a lot of jumpiness”.

“She could kill a houseplant with one scowl,” he wrote in the ghostwritten autobiography.

The detail in the Harry and William revelations everyone is missing

Tuesday 10 January 2023 08:49 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

In his forthcoming memoir Spare, Prince Harry claims Prince William attacked him during an argument at the younger brother’s Nottingham Cottage home in 2019.

The first person the Duke of Sussex called after the physical fight was not his wife – who was the main subject of the brothers’ alleged squabble – but his therapist.

Maybe Prince William, and men everywhere, should take a page out of Harry’s book, Meredith Clark writes.

Tyler Perry offered his home to the Sussexes because his mother loved Diana

Tuesday 10 January 2023 08:38 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex has said that Tyler Perry offered him his Los Angeles house to stay in because his own mother had “loved” Diana, Princess of Wales.

Harry said that the US actor and comedian had made the “generous” offer as he and Meghan sought to travel to America from Canada amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

Perry, who is known for multiple US television shows, revealed that after Diana’s famous visit to Harlem, New York in 1989, she could “do no wrong” in the eyes of his own mother.

During her visit at the time of the US Aids epidemic Diana visited hospitals and spoke to victims of the deadly disease.

Harry said that Perry had previously sent a message of support to Meghan before their wedding in 2018, and offered them his gated house in March 2020 on FaceTime.

“It was too much. Too generous,” he said, writing in his memoir, Spare.

“I asked why he was doing this. ‘My mother’. Your...? ‘My mother loved your mother’.

“I was caught completely by surprise. He said: After your mother visited Harlem, that was it. She could do no wrong in Maxine Perry’s book.

“He went on to say that his mother had died ten years earlier, that he was still grieving. I wanted to tell him it gets easier. I didn’t.”

Harry said that he and his family arrived at the “palatial” home at the end of that month and that within a few weeks it had felt “like home” - providing a safe space for their young son Archie.

He went on to describe how they had faced increasing intrusion from the paparazzi at Perry’s, forcing them to stop “venturing outside”.

Last month Perry appeared as a talking head in the Sussex‘ six-part Netflix documentary, described as a friend.

He revealed that the couple had asked him to be the godfather of their daughter Lilibet, as well as commenting on their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.

Grant Shapps says there’s ‘a lot going on’ with royal family

Tuesday 10 January 2023 08:13 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Business secretary Grant Shapps indicated he would not be reading the Duke of Sussex‘s controversial memoir Spare as he said “there’s a lot going on” among the royal family.

He told Sky News: “I fear with pressure of work, it won’t be my first priority.”

Asked what he thought of Harry’s actions, he said: “Look, I follow the long-standing convention that Cabinet ministers just don’t get into commenting on the royal family.

“Obviously there’s a lot going on there and I think that it’s not helped one bit by Cabinet ministers commenting on it.”

Unusual and eccentric world of royal life served up in Prince Harry’s memoir

Tuesday 10 January 2023 08:05 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The unusual and sometimes eccentric world of royal life from TV dinners served under domed platters to the King’s favourite aftershave is revealed in the pages of the Duke of Sussex‘s memoir.

Harry gives a glimpse of royal habits behind the walls of royal residence as he describes life growing up as a member of the monarchy.

He reveals at Balmoral, the late Queen’s Scottish retreat where the royal family spend their summers, visitors would be left a little concerned by what came out of the taps.

The duke writes: “Brownish, suggestive of weak tea, the water often alarmed guests. Sorry, but there seems to be something wrong with the water in my loo?

“Pa would always smile and assure them that nothing was wrong with the water; on the contrary it was filtered and sweetened by Scottish peat.”

Charles would come into the Balmoral bedroom Harry shared with his brother when they were boys smelling of Eau Sauvage.

The duke writes in his book Spare: “He’d slather the stuff on his cheeks, his neck, his shirt. Flowery with a hit of something harsh, like pepper or gunpowder, it was made in Paris.”

It is thought Charles wears Dior’s Eau Sauvage after-shave, which retails for around £74.

Harry passes judgement on what is likely to be his father’s longest serving companion - the teddy bear he took to Gordonstoun, the school where the King was bullied as a boy.

Harry writes: “Teddy went everywhere with Pa. It was a pitiful object, with broken arms and dangly threads, holes patched up here and there.”

He added: “Teddy expressed eloquently, better than Pa ever could, the essential loneliness of his childhood.”

The Duke of Edinburgh was famed for his love of barbecues he hosted during their Balmoral holidays, and even had a trailer especially built to house all the equipment.

But his grandson Harry reveals Philip was a dab hand at making spaghetti bolognese on the coals, while for the Queen “Granny’s speciality was the salad dressing”.

Tuesday 10 January 2023 07:45 , Peony Hirwani

Prince Harry has said that he is “not angry anymore” while reflecting on his relationship with his family and what the future holds.

During an appearance on Good Morning America on Monday (9 January), when the Duke of Sussex was asked whether there’s a part of him that can see him and his “family going back to the UK, becoming working royals with the monarchy?”

In response, Harry said he doesn’t think there is a future where he, Meghan, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, would return.

“No … even if there was an agreement or an arrangement between me and my family, there’s that third party that is going to do everything it can to make sure that isn’t possible. Not stopping us from ever going back, but making it unsurvivable. And that’s really sad, because that is essentially breaking the relationship between us,” Harry said, seemingly in reference to the British press.

The Duke of Sussex writes about the infamous fight between Meghan and Kate during a bridesmaids’ dress fitting for Princess Charlotte, claiming he found his wife “on the floor” in tears after the fallout.

Also in the book, the duke says that Kate reluctantly lent Meghan her lip gloss, was “taken aback” by the request to borrow it and “grimaced” when Meghan squeezed some on to her finger and applied it to her lips.

Opinion: What Prince Harry said about drug use and the psychological reason behind it

Monday 9 January 2023 18:30 , Emily Atkinson

Cocaine, like many other psychoactive drugs, is an effective way of altering how we feel or think, writes Ian Hamilton. So if you’re feeling low, cocaine can quickly change that negative feeling and thought pattern. Unlike counselling or mental health services, drugs don’t have a long waiting list or ask invasive questions. Drugs are easy to source and act quickly. In that sense, it is clear to see how they might appeal to someone like a young Prince Harry.

He was hardly unusual in using drugs like cocaine at this stage in his life, as it is young people who in the past made up the majority of those using drugs in a recreational way.

Prince Harry says ‘hunt for royal racist’ began after Oprah interview

Monday 9 January 2023 16:20 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex was quizzed on why his and the Duchess of Sussex‘s claim about an unnamed royal expressing concerns about how dark their unborn son’s skin would be did not appear in their Netflix documentary or his book.

Harry accused the British press of sparking a “hunt for the royal racist” following the Oprah interview, and warned CBS’s 60 Minutes interviewer Anderson Cooper that he would not discuss the matter further. Cooper said: “That wasn’t brought up in Netflix or in the book. Why?”

Harry replied: “The way the British press reacted to that was fairly typical. There was like a hunt for the royal racist. Neither of us believe that that comment or that experience or that opinion was based on racism.

“Unconscious bias, yes. But I think you speak to the majority of mixed-race couples around the world that the white side of the family would wonder, whether talking openly about it or amongst themselves, what the kids are gonna look like. The key word here was concern, as opposed to curiosity. But the way that the British press, what they turned it into, was not what it was.”

Cooper says: “You stand by that that happened but you just didn’t feel the need to...”

Harry says: “No but what else did I say at the end of, within the Oprah interview?” Cooper “That you would not discuss it further. Harry nods his head.

Prince Harry claims stepmother ‘sacrificed’ him on her ‘personal PR altar’ in upcoming memoir

Monday 9 January 2023 15:21 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Duke of Sussex claimed the Queen Consort “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar”, in the latest interview to promote his controversial memoir.

Harry attacked what he alleged was Camilla’s attempts to “rehabilitate” her image, after being cast as the “third person” in his parents’ marriage, but also sympathised with her, saying in the interview with ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) that she is not an “evil stepmother”.

The publication of Harry’s book Spare, which is due out on Tuesday, was reportedly delayed following the death of the Queen, but the duke insisted his grandmother was not angry or upset with him for wanting to step down as a senior working royal.

GMA co-host Michael Strahan read an extract from Harry’s book critical of the Queen Consort: “In a funny way I even wanted Camilla to be happy. Maybe she’d be less dangerous if she was happy.”

Another excerpt said: “I have complex feelings about gaining a step parent who I thought had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.”

Asked what Camilla had “done” at that point, Harry replied: “I have a huge amount of compassion for her, you know. Being the third person within my parents’ marriage and she had a reputation, or an image, to rehabilitate.

“Whatever conversations happened, whatever deals or trading was made right at the beginning, she was led to believe that that would be the best way of doing it.”

In a separate interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Harry said Camilla’s willingness to forge relationships with the British press made her “dangerous” and there would be “bodies left in the street because of that”.
