Meghan Markle and Prince Harry covered a lot of deeply personal topics during their tell-all Oprah interview and spoke candidly about the racist attacks Meghan has endured from British tabloids since joining the royal family.

This morning, CBS released an additional clip of Harry saying that racism was a “large part” of why he and Meghan left England. In the clip below, the duke speaks about British tabloids being “bigoted,” saying, “If the source of information is corrupt or racist or biased, then that filters out to the rest of society.”

On top of enduring racism in the monarchy itself, Meghan has been the subject of racist tabloid headlines since she and Harry went public with their relationship. Back in 2016, Prince Harry released a public statement via his communications secretary condemning the abuse directed at Meghan. “Some of this has been very public,” read the statement, via the New York Times. “The smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

The statement continued, “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game—it is her life and his.”

Glad Harry and Meghan were able to get some space from the toxicity and live life on their own terms.
