  • A lot has changed for King Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry in recent months.

  • It appeared the trio may be reconciling at Queen Elizabeth's funeral events.

  • But the release of "Harry & Meghan" and "Spare" shed new light on their fraught relationships.

Prince Harry's standing with the royal family has been complicated in recent years, to say the least.

Following Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, it seemed the Duke of Sussex may have been reconciling with his family.

But in his memoir "Spare," Harry revealed his public appearances with the royal family at the Queen's funeral didn't ease internal tensions, and the release of both the book and his Netflix series "Harry & Meghan" appeared to have put even more distance between him and his family.

After the Queen died, there were signs Prince Harry was reconciling with both King Charles and Prince William

In "Spare," Harry detailed a tense exchange between himself, his father, and his brother at his grandfather's funeral that seemed to explain where he stood with them before the Queen died.

During the meeting in April 2021, Harry said the king and William were "claiming to not know why I'd fled Britain" and called him "delusional" for saying their offices collaborated with the British tabloids.

But immediately after the Queen's death, King Charles began sending signals that he was open to reconciliation with his youngest son.

First, he expressed his "love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas" in his first address as monarch.

Then, he made an exception to allow Harry to wear his military regalia for a vigil for the Queen despite the fact that Harry was stripped of his military titles and patronages after stepping back.

And as was the case with Harry and the king, there were signs following the Queen's death that the brothers were moving toward reconciliation as well.

On September 10, Harry and Meghan joined William and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, for a walkabout at Windsor Castle to greet mourners, marking the first time the "fab four" participated in a royal event together in years.

A spokesperson for Kensington Palace told The Times of London that William invited his brother and sister-in-law to join the walk, though the outlet reported it took extensive negotiations before they proceeded.

But Harry confirmed in 'Spare' that his relationship with his father and William was tenser than ever at the time of the Queen's death

In "Spare," Prince Harry said the Queen's death did not bring him closer to his family, particularly not to his brother.

He said when he heard his grandmother was ill, he texted William to ask how he and other members of the royal family were traveling to Balmoral, where the Queen was at the time of her death. But William didn't answer the message, and Harry was informed the Queen died from the news.

And although William and Harry processed behind the Queen's coffin together at her funeral on September 19, Harry said they were "barely exchanging a word."

Since "Harry & Meghan" and "Spare" were released, it seems the brothers' relationship is in its worst state to date. On December 17, Roya Nikkhah of The Sunday Times tweeted that "William has cut all contact" with Harry following the premiere of "Harry & Meghan."

In episode four of the series, Harry said William broke an agreement they made not to trade press stories about each other, and he said Kensington Palace lied about Harry signing off on a "joint" statement from the brothers in response to a report from The Times of London that William had bullied Harry and Meghan out of the royal family.

Harry also said William screamed at him during crisis talks at Sandringham House after he and Meghan announced they were stepping back as senior royals, and in "Spare," he detailed a fight between himself and William from 2019 where he said William physically attacked him.

During a conversation with Anderson Cooper for "60 Minutes" about "Spare," Harry said he has not spoken to either King Charles or Prince William in "a while," according to People.

Representatives for Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, and the Duke of Sussex did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
