The Crown bosses have paid tribute to Prince Philip, who has died, aged 99.

Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of Edinburgh died on 9 April two months before his 100th birthday.

Tributes have poured in for the Duke, who was the longest-serving consort in British history, supporting the Queen throughout her reign.

Following the news, the team behind Netflix’s royal drama The Crown sent well wishes in a statement.

It read: “Netflix, Left Bank Pictures, Sony Pictures Television and the production team on The Crown are deeply saddened to hear of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.”

The Crown, which charts the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, has several episodes focused on Prince Philip.

In the first two seasons, he was played by Matt Smith. Tobias Menzies was later cast in the series as an older version of the Duke to reflect the advancement of time.

He will be played by Jonathan Pryce in the fifth and sixth seasons alongside Imelda Staunton, who will take over from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as the Queen.

The Duke stepped down as president or patron of more than a dozen organisations when he turned 90, but continued to be involved with hundreds more charities or bodies until his death.

He received a Covid-19 vaccination in January.
