LESLEY MARIN: Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle, where mourners have been laying flowers outside. CBS2's Tina Patel is live in Santa Monica. Had a look back at his life. Good morning, Tina.

TINA PATEL: Good morning. The Prince was just two months shy of his 100th birthday and the passing of him is already being felt by Brits here in Southern California and across the world.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, may not have had any official royal duties, but for more than seven decades he was by the Queen's side, traveling with her across the world.

PRINCE PHILIP: The object of this exhibition is to show to the [INAUDIBLE].

TINA PATEL: He made several trips to Los Angeles in the 1980s, first on a solo fundraising trip for the World Wildlife Fund, then again the next year on an official visit to City Hall with the Queen. This morning, Richard Mineards, a British journalist now living in Montecito, shared his memories of the Prince.

RICHARD MINEARDS: I found him, actually, rather funny and witty, having met him a number of times during my career covering the royal family.

TINA PATEL: Mineards says it was obvious how close the Queen and Prince were and how much she relied on both his personal and professional counsel.

RICHARD MINEARDS: He really was her rock and now her rock is no longer.

TINA PATEL: After the announcement of Prince Philip's death was posted at the gates of Buckingham Palace, Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave his condolences on behalf of the British people.

BORIS JOHNSON: Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.

TINA PATEL: Although an official cause of death has not been released, the 99-year-old had just been treated for an infection and heart condition. He was still in the hospital last month when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spoke out about why they stepped away from their royal duties and the UK. Mineards thinks that controversy will take a backseat now, as the family comes together to mourn.

RICHARD MINEARDS: I think that, you know, there will be a warming feel, a heartwarming feel towards Harry, should he get back to England for the funeral.

TINA PATEL: Now official funeral plans have not been announced yet. We understand that Prince Philip had let his final wishes be known years ago, but those plans may need to be altered due to the pandemic. Lesley, we'll send it back to you.

LESLEY MARIN: Thanks so much, Tina.
