Prince William, Kate visit royal baby Archie, Prince Charles to visit this week

Prince William and his wife, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, paid their first visit to their new nephew, Archie, on Tuesday, while grandpa Prince Charles is due to look in later this week.

This is according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly. Buckingham Palace declined to comment to USA TODAY.

For those keeping track, up until Tuesday, the only members of the royal family so far who have met baby Archie (that we know about) are his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

The palace has not commented on key aspects of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor's birth on May 6, including where it took place. The newest member of the royal family is the first child of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and the queen's eighth great-grandchild.

People magazine reported Monday that William and Kate would see the baby for the first time on Tuesday at Harry and Meghan's Frogmore Cottage home on the Windsor Castle estate.

Three of them had scheduled engagements on Tuesday: William attended a United for Wildlife meeting in London. Harry spent the day in Oxford for three engagements, including visiting a children's hospital. And Kate went to Bletchley Park, Britain's code-breaking center during WWII, to see a special D-Day exhibition.

Reporting on Harry and Meghan's first week with their baby has been vague at best.

The only reason we know the queen met Archie is because Harry and Meghan posted a picture of the meeting, which included Prince Philip and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, visiting from Los Angeles, on their mega-popular Instagram page on Wednesday.

The Sussexes did not follow suit with the William and Kate visit, which was considered "private." The reason there is so much interest in whether they visit and when is because royal fans have been deluged recently with tabloid media coverage of an alleged "feud" between the couples.

This has persisted despite recent examples of amity between them, including on May 6. William and Kate, in the midst of an engagement in London, agreed to a quick interview with royal reporters about the birth of the then-unnamed baby.

Both said they were "thrilled" and couldn't wait to meet him.

"Looking forward to seeing them in the next few days when things have quieted down," William said. "I'm very pleased and glad to welcome my own brother into the sleep deprivation society that is parenting."

Meanwhile, paternal grandfather Prince Charles has not visited yet, either, and there is no gossip about a supposed feud between him and his son and daughter-in-law. Charles and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were in Germany on an official trip when the baby was born.

“We couldn’t be more delighted at the news and we’re looking forward to meeting the baby when we return,” Charles told well-wishers Tuesday in Berlin, according to a Clarence House tweet.

Meanwhile, the secrecy that surrounded some aspects of the birth prevailed. If and when the baby's royal relatives visit, it will be harder for media cameras to catch them in the act: Frogmore Cottage is more secluded and behind the Windsor security cordon so it's not as easy to snap royal vehicles entering palace gates as it was when Harry and Meghan lived at Kensington Palace.

When William and Kate's first child, Prince George, 5, was born in July 2013, the comings and goings of maternal and paternal grandparents at St. Mary's Hospital in London were covered in detail by the media.

Then, when the queen went to see her new heir a day later for a half-hour visit at the Cambridge's Nottingham Cottage flat, she was spotted making the short journey from Buckingham Palace and to Kensington Palace in a dark green Bentley.

But things have been different for the birth of baby Archie, including the rise of social media and the young royals' embrace of platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.

Harry and Meghan's press minions not only announced the birth on Instagram, they posted the video of Harry announcing it Monday to a hastily arranged gaggle of reporters at the Windsor Castle stables, and more video of their introducing the baby to the public at a photo op two days later inside the castle.

After posting the black-and-white photo of the queen looking delighted at the baby in Meghan's arms, the next big baby photo drop on #sussexroyal came on Sunday, Mother's Day: They posted a picture of the baby's feet against a backdrop of spring forget-me-not flowers, said to be a favorite of the late Princess Diana, the baby's other grandmother.
