  • The woman-named Irene Mayor-is in the hospital with serious injuries, and the Duke and Duchess have released a statement about the accident.

Earlier this week before that Prince William Father's Day drama even picked up speed, Prince William and Kate Middleton were involved in controversy. Their royal convoy was involved in a serious accident with an 83-year-old woman named Irene Mayor on Monday, People reports.

The convoy (which is fleet of cars and motorcycles that travel in a pack for protection purposes like the Secret Service, in case you were curious) was going from London to Windsor when one of the police motorcycles reportedly ran over Irene as she was walking. Her family has told outlets that she's still in the hospital with serious injuries, though thankfully she is in stable condition.

Sources say that Will and Kate obviously feel bad about what happened, and they've sent Irene flowers and a handwritten note. Their spokesperson also gave this statement to the public:

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were deeply concerned and saddened to hear about the accident on Monday afternoon,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said in a statement to The Telegraph. “Their Royal Highnesses have sent their very best wishes to Irene and her family and will stay in touch throughout every stage of her recovery.”

Still, people want answers, so the Independent Office for Police Conduct in England is now investigating what exactly happened.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision involving a marked police motorcycle attached to the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command and a woman pedestrian on Upper Richmond Road, Richmond, south west London at 12:50 p.m. on Monday 17 June,” they said in a statement to The Telegraph.

Irene hasn't given any public statements of her own quite yet, though according to People, her daughter Fiona told The Sun that Irene's “got lots of injuries. They are just keeping her stable at the moment.”

The Sun also reports that a witness said the policeman's “bike hit [Irene] and she spun round, off her feet and fell badly on the floor.”
