Prince William Releases Heartfelt Statement on Prince Philip and New Photo of Him With Prince George

Prince William has released a personal statement in tribute to his late grandfather Prince Philip on behalf of him and his wife Kate Middleton. Philip, the Queen's husband of 73 years, passed away peacefully on April 9, the Palace announced.

Featuring a never-before-seen photo of Philip with William's oldest son Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge wrote:

My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.

I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!

My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.

Immediately after news of Philip's death, Kate and William reposted the Palace's statement on their own Kensington Palace Instagram. They wrote:

It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.

Further announcements will be made in due course.

Kate and William kept the details of their personal relationship to Philip largely private. But the Duchess of Cambridge was compared to Philip in a People cover story from last June for her conduct and willingness to let William, the future king of England, take the spotlight over her.

“She’s never trying to outshine him [Prince William] in any way,” royal biographer Penny Junor told the outlet. “I think that Kate is a bit like Prince Philip supporting the Queen. She doesn’t outshine William but still has a lot to say herself.”
