Prince William Reveals Details About Princess Charlotte's Family Birthday Party

Princess Charlotte celebrated her sixth birthday on May 3, and according to her dad, Prince William, the little royal got to have a small party this year.

On Tuesday, the Duke of Cambridge made an official visit to Babcock Vehicle Engineering, learning about the company's role during the pandemic. While there, he was asked about his daughter's birthday.

"She had a lovely day, thank you," he said, according to Hello! "Last year it was her birthday in lockdown, but this year we were able to have one other family over. They grow up very fast. It was great fun."

In honor of the princess's birthday, the Duke and Duchess also shared a new photo of their daughter. The Duchess of Cambridge captured the picture this weekend, at the family's home in Norfolk. In the photo, Charlotte grins at the camera, sporting a floral dress with a Peter Pan collar.

After the photo's release, Charlotte's dress, made by childrenswear designer Rachel Riley, immediately sold out. Riley's designs are quite popular with the royal family—Prince George has also worn the brand's clothing. Riley herself was pleased that Princess Charlotte sported her dress for the birthday photo.

"It was such a treat to see Princess Charlotte wearing our button front floral dress to mark her sixth birthday! She looks so happy in the picture," Riley told Vanity Fair. "We look forward to seeing Princess Charlotte’s style develop as she continues to grow and mature and we have no doubt she will become as much of a style icon as her mother is."

Though this dress is no longer available, Riley noted that it will be back in stock soon. She also described how this dress is indicative of Charlotte's fashion evolution, changing as she grows older. The designer compared this style to the Riley dress the princess wore to the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019.

"It’s fun to see that this dress is a style which is as pretty on a four-year-old as it is for a six-year-old," Riley said. "The dress she wore when she was four featured a delicate, ditsy print in pastel pink, blue and yellow, whereas the style she wore in her most recent picture, she chose a larger print in stronger colors. This print has bigger pink flowers on a navy background, which is in keeping with the choice of older girls who tend to migrate towards bolder fashion choices."
