Princess Anne Stylishly Celebrates Turning 70 with New Birthday Portraits

Princess Anne Has a Message For Younger Royals

"Some of these things don’t work. You may need to go back to basics."

Before Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, Princess Anne was regarded as the royal family's fashion icon — and at 70 years old, she's still holding onto the OG title.

On Saturday, the Princess Royal celebrated her milestone birthday in style with a series of new portraits. In the photos — taken by one of her favorite photographer John Swannell at her Gloucestershire home back in February (before the coronavirus pandemic) — the Queen's only daughter recalls the glamour of her earlier years in a rotation of regal outfits, including a brocade dress in emerald green and a white, full-length gown with lace overlay.

In the third snapshot, Anne models more casual attire, wearing a red turtleneck underneath a plaid shirt, and a pair of loose-fitting slacks.

Queen Elizabeth marked her daughter's birthday with one of the aforementioned photos, and thanked fans for their "warm wishes," adding the hashtags "#HappyBirthdayHRH" and "#PrincessRoyalat70." Meanwhile, brother Prince Charles and sister-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, wished Anne a happy birthday with a slideshow of "family photos through the decades."

At 70 years old, Anne is one of the hardest-working members of the royal family. She keeps busy with her 300-plus patronages and schedule of engagements, but for her birthday she's reportedly taking a break with a surprise, socially-distanced celebration. “I’m sure we’ll do something as a family to celebrate her 70 amazing years, her son-in-law Mike Tindall told the BBC about Anne's secret birthday plans. "She’s just an incredible woman in terms of how much work she can get through in the year. We will be doing something. As yet, I don’t know whether she knows, so my lips are sealed.”
