Princesses, wrestlers, a cow chip throw: Check out 6 fun things to do in Springfield

Put on your walking shoes to learn about history or support a good cause, both are among happenings this weekend in Springfield. But you also can eat your weight in sweet corn, listen to music, sip wine, or take the kids to a princess parade. Check out these six fun things to do.

Illinois Women's History walk

Trace the path of women who paved the way for others during the Illinois Women's History walk on Friday.

Meet at the Dana Thomas House, 301 E Lawrence Avenue, at 2 p.m. for the 1.5 mile walking tour that concludes at the Illinois State Capitol. Only the exterior of historical sites will be visited, interior tours must be scheduled separately.

Featured historic sites include the Dana-Thomas House, Vachel Lindsay Home, Illinois Governor's Mansion, Illinois State Supreme Court, and east lawn of the Illinois State Capitol.

History education interpreters from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Land Management will guide the tour.

Chatham Jaycees Sweet Corn Festival

Head to the Chatham Jaycees Sweet Corn Festival for food and fun with the family. The festival takes place at 713 S. Main St., Chatham on Friday, 5:30-11:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m.

Live music, food, vendors, and a variety of children's activities are on the schedule. The Little Miss Sweet Corn pageant, 5K run, and Illinois Championship Cow Chip Throw are also among the fun.

One Springfield Unity 5K

Walk, run or ride for unity at the One Springfield Unity 5K on Saturday.

The fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois starts at 9 a.m. at Southeast High School, 2350 E Ash St.

A $20 registration fee is required and includes a t-shirt. Springfield Police Department will be along the route to help with traffic control.

Wrestling for a Cure

Support kids fighting cancer at Wrestling for a Cure on Saturday.

Wrestlers Yoder and Bull Brunson will face off for the heavyweight championship title at 6 p.m., in the Illinois Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, 801 E. Sangamon Ave.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Proceeds will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital for cancer research. For more information visit www.facebook.com/wrestlingforacure17

Springfield Fairytale Ball

Join Disney princesses for stories, songs, and a meet and greet at the Springfield Fairytale Ball on Sunday.

The ball takes place at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center, 3000 South Dirksen Parkway, with programs at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m.

A royal entrance, princess parade, musical performances, games, and more will be included. Tickets are $20 for adults and $35 for children. Infants 12 months and under are free.

Catalina wine mixer

Mix and mingle with the pet rescuing community at the Catalina wine mixer hosted by Forever Home Feline Ranch on Sunday.

The event will take place at Arlington's Catering & Historic Venue, 210 Broadway, 3-9 p.m.

Drink specials, a silent auction, snacks, and music by DJ Black Cats will be included. There is a $15 admission fee which includes two drink tickets.
