Pritzker Extends Illinois' Eviction Hold For Another Month

ILLINOIS — Renters in Illinois will be protected from evictions for another month amid the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Wednesday. The state’s moratorium on evictions now runs through Aug. 22.

Starting Aug. 10, renters will be able to apply for grants of up to $5,000 each to cover rent. The $150 million Emergency Rental Assistance Program is expected to help about 30,000 people in the state.

Homeowners can apply for $15,000 mortgage-relief grants from the Illinois Housing Development Authority starting Aug. 28, Pritzker said.

“For many people, the ability to weather this crisis hinges on their ability to keep a roof over tier family’s heads,” Pritzker said. “It’s not enough to say that we want to build a more just and equitable state on the other side of this pandemic; we have to take tangible action to get there.”
