Being our semi-regular weekly survey of what’s goin’ down in the several states where, as we know, the real work of governmentin’ gets done, and where gravity fails and negativity won’t pull you through.

Between the impeachment inquiry and the presidential campaign, the activities in the labs have been pretty well obscured, but the mischief continues nevertheless. For example, the Republicans on the ground in Virginia seem to be taking the flip of their state legislature very well. Take the folks in Lee County, which probably isn’t named after either Harper or Bill. From something called the Virginia Mercury:

One man said the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump — which he suggested could be a “coup” — shows the need for an armed citizenry capable of standing up to tyranny. Another raised the possibility that, if Americans can’t keep their guns, they may one day have to “do like in Hong Kong,” where pro-democracy protesters are using improvised weapons like bows, firebombs and catapults to resist authorities.

“The time is coming,” said Jeff Wade, an assistant pastor at a Baptist church in Madison Heights. “I’m mighty afraid that we’re going to have to defend ourselves because of what we believe in. Not only on the Second Amendment, but on any other issue that the government declares to be right, but God declares to be wrong.”

Amherst — a rural county of almost 32,000 people north of Lynchburg — was set to declare itself a “Second Amendment Sanctuary,” following a mostly symbolic trend sweeping the countryside after Democrats triumphed in this month’s General Assembly elections while promising to enact tougher gun laws. With legislative majorities taking power for the session that begins in January, Democrats are expected to push for universal background checks, red flag laws that would allow authorities to take guns from people deemed to be a threat, bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines and other measures.

Somewhere out there in our politics, there are Democratic politicians who believe this all will break when and if we are rid of the current president*. These Democratic politicians are wrong and should not be taken seriously.

We move along to Ohio, where some fetus-fondlers are pushing the sanity envelope off toward Alpha Centauri. From the Columbus Dispatch:

Anyone performing an abortion in Ohio would be subject to the death penalty under a new ban on the procedure proposed by anti-abortion groups and more than 20 Republican legislators.

Except for a very narrow exception when the life of the woman is in danger, abortions would constitute aggravated murder under House Bill 413. Offenders “shall suffer death or be imprisoned for life,” the Ohio Revised Code says. Margie Christie, president of the Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio and executive director of Dayton Right to Life, was asked whether abortionists should face the death penalty.

“Based on circumstance — would leave that up to a courts and/or jury,” she replied via email. Christie leads a coalition of anti-abortion activists across the state who contend that Ohio Right to Life has not pushed hard enough for sweeping “pro-life” legislation. One of the bill’s main sponsors, Rep. Candice Keller, R-Middletown, said in a statement, “The time for regulating evil and compromise is over. The time has come to abolish abortion in its entirety and recognize that each individual has the inviolable and inalienable right to life.”

You will note from the story that the “respectable” anti-choice organizations are staying far away from this law, largely because they never have had the intellectual honesty to carry “Abortion Is Murder!” to its logical conclusion, and now their allies are calling that bluff. However, that there are legislators willing to vote for this measure remains a serious danger to women and their rights.

And we conclude, as is our custom, in the great state of Oklahoma, where Blog Official Roper ’n Rider Friedman of the Plains brings us a sad fish story. From the Oklahoman:

Mike Mears, CEO of Magellan Midstream Partners and chairman of the VisitTulsa Executive Board of Directors, said in a news release Tuesday that the delay in collecting a 3% assessment on hotel stays tied to the improvement district has hamstrung efforts to recruit events. “In this case, time is money,” Mears said in the release. “The delay in available funding from the TID has cost Tulsa an estimated $50,000 each day in lost opportunity. The city estimates it has lost an estimated $292,500 each month it hasn’t collected revenue from the Tourism Improvement District. Revenue hasn’t been collected since June 25, when District Judge Linda Morrissey issued a temporary injunction in a lawsuit brought by a group of Tulsa hoteliers.

In my experience, bass fishermen are a fairly wild bunch and are very loose with their money. This is a real political crisis in Tulsa. Between these guys and Gordon Sondland, being a hotelier isn’t what it was at the beginning of the week.

This is your democracy, America. Cherish it.
