Pro-Russian service members inspect Mariupol

STORY: Fierce fighting between the Russian-backed forces and the Ukrainian army that the war-torn city has seen in the past three weeks has now concentrated around the Azovstal plant, the last stronghold for the Ukrainian forces in the port-city.

The ongoing power-struggle between the opposing sides turned Mariupol, once a city of over 400, 000 on the Sea of Azov into an arena of constant urban warfare.

Mariupol’s Mayor Vadym Boichenko said on Thursday that more than 100,000 people still need to be evacuated urgently from the city, describing the situation in Mariupol as a humanitarian catastrophe.
