Celebrity make-up artist Mary Phillips is the glow-to girl for the likes of the Kardashian-Jenners, Hadid sisters, Chrissy Teigen and Emily Ratajkowski. This weekend her canvas was Kendall Jenner at Coachella, where she had a hand in setting the beauty tone for this year’s festival season.

“Festival looks tend to be more playful with all the ‘bells and whistles’,” she tells Bazaar. “You can get away with a lot more things than you can for daily life or red carpets.” The look she created for Kendall Jenner comprised of highly reflective skin, with a playful pop of colour on the eyes. Note: no glitter.

“We’re very collaborative and always love fresh, beautiful, glowy skin,” she explained of their working relationship. “Kendall is always naturally glam but she looked much more glowy for Coachella this year. I really wanted to pump up her highlight so I chose Iconic London’s illuminator because of the way it shines on the skin and glows in the light.”

The formula for this radiant look was quite the cocktail. “I always start with Crème de La Mer on clean skin,” she explained. Next, she used La Mer's Soft Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation in Beige Nude all over “for fresh flawless skin,” followed by the Nudestix Nudies in Sunkissed “to add warmth and depth to the skin”. Then came the highlighter: “I finished the skin with Iconic London’s liquid Illuminator in Original to highlight areas for a radiant glow.”

In fact, Phillips used this illuminator all over Jenner.

“Applying highlighter on the body to glow from head-to-toe is a big beauty festival trend and it’s a hero product for me this year.” She favours the Iconic London one because of its concentrated pigment. “You can do extreme highlighting or tone it down for a softer sheen by mixing it in with moisturiser and/or foundation,” she schools us.

The make-up artist then played with textures on Jenner’s eyes and lips. She applied a wash of green eyeshadow over the eyelids, (courtesy of the brand La Femme, but you can try the Huda Beauty Obsessions Precious Stones Eyeshadow Palette in Emerald for a UK alternative), and a coat of Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill mascara on the lashes. Then for the lips Phillips applied the Iconic London Lip Plumping Gloss in Nearly Nude, “because I wanted to do a neutral high gloss lip to balance her colourful matte eye”.
