Professionals to tell District 207 High School students of career paths in Black History Month event

Maine Township High School District 207 will sponsor an event called “Black Excellence is Everywhere” Feb. 16 as part of the district’s recognition of Black History Month.

According to promotional material for the event, which is open to students who identify as Black, African American and multiracial, a career and mentorship panel will take place at Maine East High School from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., along with dinner.

The District is offering transportation from Maine South and Maine West High Schools as well, according to the event advertisement. The Maine Township High School Foundation provided a grant to pay for food and transport, according to District 207 spokesperson Brett Clark.

Clark said the event, featuring five professionals who will present on their own career paths and educations, was organized by Black Student Unions from Maine South, Maine East and Maine West High Schools.

About 40 students are expected to attend, Clark said.

“This event ties into our career exploration work in District 207 as we have evolved our high schools to provide integrated career services to benefit students and families as they determine the best path after high school graduation,” Clark wrote in a message to Pioneer Press.
