‘Profound sadness’: North Andover Police Department mourning death of officer

The North Andover Police Department is mourning the death of an officer who passed away on Wednesday afternoon.

Lead Communication Officer John Wood lost his battle with a “short illness,” North Andover Police Chief Charles Gray announced Thursday.

“John Wood was a pillar in our department. As a former firefighter, he brought a wealth of knowledge to our Department and taught many of us,” Gray said in a statement. “John was one of the most dedicated, hard-working, and unselfish members of this department’s history and he will be greatly missed.”

Gray noted that Wood was an integral part of the building and overhaul of the RMS system as well as the policies and procedures of the communications program.

“You would be hard-pressed to meet a better person, mentor, or friend. Rest easy ‘Woody,’ we’ll take it from here,” Gray added.

The department didn’t share any additional details on Wood’s death.
