Program on chalk art creations to be presented July 14 at Tecumseh District Library

TECUMSEH — A Michigan author known for his use of sidewalk and street chalk to make some "larger than life" temporary street art designs will visit the Tecumseh District Library from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14.

David Zinn, a resident of Ann Arbor, will share a little bit about his book “The Chalk Art Handbook: How to Create Masterpieces on Driveways and Sidewalks and in Playgrounds” and afterward will encourage all in attendance to head outside and create their own chalk art masterpieces on the library’s sidewalks and parking lot.

Author and illustrator David Zinn will be a guest presenter at the Tecumseh District Library from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14. He will talk about his book "The Chalk Art Handbook: How to Create Masterpieces on Driveways and Sidewalks and in Playgrounds.” Attendees will be invited to create their own chalk art on the library's sidewalks and parking lot after the presentation.

Zinn will share some tips and tricks on how to create an array of sidewalk creatures. He will offer step-by-step guidance on how to make chalk art come to life and will offer advice on specific techniques such as smudging, perspective and 3-D illusions.

A limited amount of chalk will be provided by Zinn and the library, so participants are encouraged to bring their favorite colors with them. Registration is also required and can be completed by calling 517-423-2238 or by visiting the library, 215 N. Ottawa St. The library can also be contacted at www.tecumsehlibrary.org.

Zinn is a self-taught artist who, after working for more than 20 years as a commercial freelance illustrator, picked up a box of sidewalk chalk as an excuse to “work” outdoors on a nice day, and now he reaches thousands of people all over the world with his temporary street art creatures, a news release from the library said. His art has taken him all over the United States and on the streets of Taiwan, Sweden, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

He is the author of “Temporary Preserves” and “Underfoot Menagerie” and has been featured in such publications as The Guardian, Business Insider and the Los Angeles Times. His most recent book is titled “Chance Encounters: Temporary Street Art."
