Program to explore the history of Brown's Lake Bog

On Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m. at the Historic Shreve Presbyterian Church, 343 N. Market St., Shreve, the County Line Historical Society of Wayne/Holmes will present the program "The History of Brown's Lake Bog", with speaker Denny Jordan of Shreve.

The public is welcome and there is no admission fee. The presentation will look at the recent history of the lake. It will cover the basic geologic history and processes that resulted in the creation of this rare and unique feature. The resulting physical features this kettle hole lake have are a profound effect on the ecology and biological communities present today. In conclusion, the discussion will cover why it is important and should be protected.

Jordan, born in Norwalk, attended Adrian College and transferred to Case Western Reserve University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology. Employed as a field engineer, he ran tests on gas and oil wells and specialized in evaluating gas storage wells.

From 1990-93 he attended Wayne College and the University of Akron, earning an Ohio Teaching Certification in secondary science. He worked as a science teacher at Wooster High School, teaching classes in physical science, biology, physical geology, historical geology and botany while coaching girls volleyball and basketball at Wooster and Triway.

He retired and became an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist, volunteering at the Wilderness Center, ODNR Killbuck Wildlife Area and as a docent at the Wayne County Historical Society. He was appointed in 2015 as commissioner of the Wayne County Park District and elected in 2016 as the Park District Board chairman where he currently serves.
