Nutley ruptured water line has been sealed. Water service will be restored within days

Utility workers have located and sealed off the leak in a ruptured Nutley water main that caused flooding and disrupted service to several North Jersey towns over the past few days, officials said.

North Jersey District Water Supply Commission spokesperson William Maer said Sunday evening that agency crews are now working to restore water service to affected North Jersey towns, and service should be restored within 24 to 48 hours.

Restoring full service "includes testing of the lines and the extensive monitoring and treatment of the water supply," Maer said in a statement.

Agency workers and private contractors had worked "round the clock" to identify the leak and seal it off throughout the weekend, Maer said.

The water main break in Nutley on Friday had caused low pressure for some residents. It had no impact on the town's water supply but did affect the water supply of other municipalities in Essex, Hudson and Passaic counties.

Bloomfield's water supply returned to stable water pressure, officials said Saturday, after it established two emergency interconnections with the Passaic Valley Water Commission in Nutley and in Clifton. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was working with the town, according to a notice posted on its website.

A boil-water advisory has been in effect for Bloomfield since Thursday.

"Bloomfield Water customers are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using, for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables, and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice," the township said. "Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water."

Montclair and Glen Ridge announced "water emergencies," prohibiting non-essential water usage. That includes watering lawns, non-commercial washing of cars and other automobiles, and serving water in local restaurants unless specifically requested by customers, according to an announcement posted Saturday on the Montclair township website.

The leaks occurred in water lines connected to two aqueducts maintained by the Newark Division of Water Supply and the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission.

Montclair has requested state and federal assistance and asked residents to conserve water. "One of the biggest challenges and that we need your assistance with is water use reduction," Mayor Sean Spiller said Saturday.

Glen Ridge asked residents to turn off lawn sprinklers while the repairs were continuing.
