Project to widen Anthony Gap road two months ahead of schedule

LAS CRUCES ― A project to improve lighting and expand New Mexico 404 from two lanes to four lanes is two months ahead of schedule and about halfway complete, according to a New Mexico Department of Transportation spokesperson.

The work spans from milepost 0.9, the Anthony exit, to milepost 8.8, the Chaparral exit. The work on NM 404, also known as the Anthony Gap, was expected to be completed in December 2023 with an estimated cost of $39.8 million.

A May update from the District 1 office of the New Mexico Department of Transportation indicated that the contractor, Mountain States Constructors Inc., currently is adding drainage structures and paving. Subcontractors, the update indicated, would continue work on box culverts, gutters and lighting boxes near the Doña Ana Community College campus. Game fences also are expected to be installed.

Work on the Interstate 10 exit appears to be completed.
