About the projection: Indian Creek baseball, I'm sorry

It's been a few months since the sports season rolled over from the winter to spring and as with each new season, I made a set of predictions and expectations for the 2022 baseball and softball teams in and around Morgan County.

My Class 3A-A projection piece had Indian Creek's baseball team going 8-12. It appears they made it a mission to prove me wrong. In fact, they called me out on it before the season started. Sitting now at 11-7, they have indeed proved me wrong.

So without further ado, here it goes — I'm sorry.

But here's the thing about predicitions, it's just a set of numbers. When I sit down and do the research for predicitions, I'm going off available data. How'd they perform last year? Who left the program? How much will that impact the team? Who's returning?

None of it accounts for the actual elements of the game. The stuff that's inbetween the lines that makes a team, a team. The attitude, the emotions, the determination, the chemistry. Basically the stuff that makes sports special.

With this being my first spring season covering sports around Morgan County, there's still plenty to learn. When I made my prediciton, I should have considered the fact the Braves have consistently produced top-tier teams, especially as of recent (six sectional championships, four in the last six years).

As a person who covers a lot of local programs, I'm certainly not out for blood with any numbers I predict in the win and loss columns. The Braves went 8-14 last year, but they were also a young a team. They're still young this year, but the experience from last season has allowed them to make big strides, and that's what matters most.

Whether a team outperforms a set of predictions or not, it's my hope as a sportswriter that all of our (Reporter-Times) teams — Martinsville, Mooresville, Monrovia, Eminence, Decatur Central, Indian Creek — have excellent seasons. You won't see me arguing if a team proves me wrong, I encourage it. If anything, I hope the projections can serve as some sort of motivator.

Sometimes things go to plan, sometimes they don't. Sometimes projections hit, but most of time, they don't. At the end of the day, if local teams succeed, every party succeeds, right?

Indian Creek, it's been a joy to observe the success the team has had on the diamond and I look forward to seeing what's in store come sectional time.
