Projo's All-State Athletes: Here are the best winter high school athletes in RI

It's that time of year again, when The Providence Journal honors the top student-athletes of the most recent high school sports season. The All-State First and Second Teams of the winter season were announced all week long, beginning Monday with the Boys and Girls Indoor Track Teams. Teams were presented both online, and in the Sports section of the print newspaper. (In print the teams will be presented through Sunday.)

Along with our major sponsor, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, we are proud to announce the nominees for Players of Year for all the winter sorts. Winners will be announced during the live show Tuesday, June 27, at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium — part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.

Boys & Girls Indoor Track

East Greenwich senior Reese Fahys made a triumphant return after injures robbed her junior season. She finished the 3,000 in 10:16.60 to win her first indoor state gold medal. She's competing again this spring and plans to run for Providence College. And Moses Brown senior Sophia Gorriaran, who will run for Harvard next season, closed out her indoor career in style. She dominated at the state meet and won the 1,000 by 4.62 seconds, the 1,500 by 3.44 seconds and anchored the Quakers’ gold-medal-winning 4x400 relay team. St. Raphael senior Devan Kipyego closed his career with a state meet no one will soon forget, with wins in the 3,000 and 1,500 and wins in the 600 and 1,000 gave him four golds. He became first runner in Rhode Island history to win four individual state titles in one year. Read about the rest of the Boys Indoor Track teams here.

Boys & Girls Basketball

On the boys side, several of the players will be taking their games to the next level. East Providence's junior guard Trey Rezendes helped the Townies reach their first final four, and he’ll prep at Tabor Academy next season. La Salle's Kelvin Odih helped get the Rams to the State Tournament final game, and will reclass as a junior next fall and play at South Kent, and Azmar Abdullah from Hendricken helped lead the Hawks to the state championship. He plans a prep season at Vermont Academy. Find the full first and second boys basketball teams here.

On the girls side, Jillian Rogers, of North Kingstown makes her third appearance as an All-Stater — twice on the first team, and with good reason. She scored more than 500 points last winter, finishing her career as the Skippers’ third all-time leading scorer with 1,353. Genesis McNeill, of Juanita Sanchez, played perhaps her best season yet, helping the Cavaliers win the Division I championship and earning the Gatorade Player of the Year. Wrestling

Scituate junior Gabriel Bouyssou’s goal entering high school was to go undefeated for four years. After this season, he’s 3-for-3. Bouyssou owned the 145-pound class all season and had a dominant performance at the state meet, then backed it up with an equally impressive showing at the New England Championships that saw him win the title via fall. Ponaganset freshman Joseph Joyce may be on a similar course. Joyce was a powerhouse at 138 pounds and was ranked in the New England Top 10 most of the season. Here's the full list of the 2023 Providence Journal All-State wrestling first and second teamers.

Gymnastics

Cranston West senior Brooke Anderson was an elite performer all season, but she shined brightest in her final state meet. She won gold in bars, silver in the vault and finished first in the all-around, edging Barrington All-Stater Shaye Robinson by .750 to become the Falcons’ first champ. Boys & Girls Hockey

Hendricken's Will Cavanagh was a constant for the Hawks, and his production up front was instrumental in Hendricken finding its groove and then winning its third straight state championship. Cavanagh led Division I in assists with 16, was first in points with 30 and was fifth in goals with 14. In goal, Warwick junior Braxton Bragg, helped make a good team great with his play in net and nearly got the Militia to the state title game. While his .924 save percentage was second among D-I starters, no player in RI turned away more high-percentage shots than Bragg. On the girls side, Keira Goffe has helped the SCM co-op team win two straight titles. From Smithfield, she was second in the state in goals (17) and second in points (27), and her playmaking showed up during the Sentinels run to the state crown. Down in South County, Michaela Bucci took her game to new heights this season and nearly helped the Storm earn a spot in the state title game. Bucci — from North Kingstown — helped South County become one of the best defenses in the state this year. Here's the full Girls Hockey first and second All-State teams.

Boys & Girls Swimming

Lincoln School's Courtney Boghosian’s made a fourth All-State appearance — second as a first-teamer. In her final high school season before swimming for Holy Cross next season, Boghosian got that elusive gold medal, winning the 200 freestyle before adding a silver in the 500 free. And Barrington senior Kristen Baker had a season to remember. She picked up two individual silver medals at the state meet in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke and earned a gold in the 200 medley relay. More importantly, she helped wrap up Barrington’s state title, the fourth during her career. Read about the entire first and second Girls Swimming All-State teams here.

On the boys side, Barrington senior Lucas Jauregui added two more gold medals to his collection this winter, and found some individual success as well. With two golds in the medley relay and 200 free relay, Jauregui finished second in the 50 and 100 free to help Barrington win a second straight state title. Hendricken's Nick Andrews made his final state meet a fitting end to a stellar high school career — setting a state record in the 100-meter freestyle and winning the 200 free. That totals six individual career golds before swimming at Bryant next season. Here are the Boys Swimming All-State teams.
