ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital receives 5-star rating

ADRIAN TWP. — ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital recently earned a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

CMS recently published its Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating results on the Care Compare website to help consumers better understand hospital performance and make more informed decisions about care providers.

CMS assigned a star rating from one through five to more than 4,500 hospitals across the country. Of those hospitals, only 483 received five stars, the highest-level quality rating, a news release from ProMedica said.

The rating summarizes 46 hospital quality measures that are divided into five areas of quality that encompass a star rating. The five areas measured are mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care.

ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital also received a five-star rating from CMS in 2022 and 2021.

“As a health care organization, it is our responsibility to strive to be the best we can be and provide high quality care to our patients,” ProMedica Hickman Hospital President Dr. Julie Yaroch said in the release. “This recognition solidifies our team’s efforts to live our mission and validates the commitment to best practices. Patient safety and experience remain our top priority. We are very proud to receive this five-star rating again in 2023.”

Other regional hospitals that received five stars include ProMedica Memorial Hospital of Fremont, Ohio, University of Michigan Hospital, Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital (formerly St. Joseph Mercy Hospital), Chelsea Hospital and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

The Care Compare site also lists star ratings from patient surveys officially known as the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS).

In the HCAHPS, Charles and Virginia Hickman ProMedica Hospital received a three-star rating from its patients.

The HCAHPS shows that 80% of Charles and Virginia Hickman ProMedica Hospital patients reported that their nurses “always" communicated well (national average: 79%, Michigan average: 80%); 80% reported that their doctors "always" communicated well (national average: 79%, Michigan average: 78%); 68% reported that they "always" received help as soon as they wanted (national average: 65%, Michigan average: 68%), 59% reported that the staff "always" explained about medicines before giving it to them (national average: 61%, Michigan average: 61%); 72% reported that their room and bathroom were "always" clean (national average: 72%, Michigan average: 69%); 59% reported that the area around their room was "always" quiet at night (national average: 62%, Michigan average: 59%); 85% reported that “yes” they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home (national average: 86%, Michigan average: 87%); 46% "strongly agree" they understood their care when they left the hospital (national average: 51%, Michigan average: 51%); 68% gave their hospital a rating of 9 or 10 on a scale with 0 being the lowest and 10 being the highest (national average: 70%, Michigan average: 69%); and 64% reported “yes” they would definitely recommend the hospital (national average: 69%, Michigan average: 68%).

The HCAHPS patient survey rating is typically based on a one-year response period. The Charles and Virginia Hickman ProMedica Hospital 2023 results were based on 553 completed surveys with a survey response rate of 24%, the HCAHPS reported.
