ADRIAN TWP. — ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital has received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from an independent nonprofit organization that reviews hospital patient safety.

This is the third consecutive grading period by the Leapfrog Group that Hickman Hospital has received an A. Leapfrog issues grades each spring and fall. Hickman was not graded in spring 2021, which was the first marking period after the hospital opened in September 2020.

The grades look at how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and errors. They can be found online at HospitalSafetyGrade.org. Categories include post-surgical infections, bed sores, falls, blood clots, practices implemented to prevent errors, staffing, communication with doctors and nurses, and responsiveness of staff to patients.

“We are so proud to have received this recognition from Leapfrog once again as it is a reflection of our commitment to providing the best possible care to our community,” Dr. Julie Yaroch, president of ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital, said in a news release. “This is truly a team award as we could not reach the quality and safety goals we set before ourselves without everyone giving a 110%.”

Leapfrog Group has been assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the United States for the past 10 years. The grading system is peer-reviewed, transparent and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in the release. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”

Other area hospitals that received A's are Chelsea Hospital, Henry Ford Health Jackson Hospital, ProMedica Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. U-M is one of only 22 hospital in the nation to receive A's during each of Leapfrog's grading period for the past 10 years.

Mercy St. Anne Hospital in Toledo, ProMedica Toledo Hospital and Trinity Health St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor each received a B grade. Hillsdale Hospital, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and the University of Toledo Medical Center each received a C.
