ProMedica Coldwater receives patient safety award

COLDWATER — ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital received an “A” hospital safety grade for 2022 from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

The twice-a-year survey rated 82 of Michigan’s 141 licensed hospitals and surgery centers.

There are only 22 with an “A.” The twice-a-year report released at the end of April reported 27 hospitals received a “B,” while 29 got a “C,” and four received a “D.”

“This national award is a tangible recognition of all the effort and hard work put forth by our staff, employees and providers who relentlessly focus on quality and safety for our patients,” said Alan Sattler, president of ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.

The award puts ProMedica in Coldwater in the top 28% of hospitals in Michigan for patient safety standards.

“Our work doesn’t stop with an A grade, the highest rating possible. Our staff and providers strive daily to provide the highest level of quality care and keep our patients and community safe. It’s our mission and commitment to our community and Leapfrog validates that commitment,” the hospital president said.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an A-F grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

Locally, Oaklawn in Marshall received a “B,” while Bronson Battle Creek, Three Rivers, and Hillsdale received a “C.”

Some hospitals like Sturgis do not participate.

Hospitals are also evaluated against national averages for criteria like hospital leadership, staff communication, and efficient quantity of qualified nurses.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But ProMedica Coldwater Hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”
